Details Matter: though I’m yet to actually step foot on the property of Golden Golf Club it’s clear it’s one of the most beautiful places in 🇨🇦 maybe even planet 🌎
While reflecting on the year, Graeme Kreiner told me their rounds were up and included that their STAFF rounds were up too. What a cool metric. I think it says a lot.
Staff satisfaction and engagement are the obvious correlations, let alone spin off benefits like relations and rapport with members and guests.
Graeme went on to say how different the course and experience is from the staff while playing. This will only improve the staff’s care for what they do everyday. Kudos Graeme and Golden GC! 👏

'Community Boozers' are a great idea. Scotland has hundreds of Pubs that are worth saving but, for one reason or another, don't get the 'footfall' or don't adhere to modern, 'chain pub owner' sensibilities and have to close.
It sounds a bit glib but the clue really is, in the 'name'. Many people (not just old, retired blokes, new folk in the area too) should rely on their 'local' for a sense of purpose. A reason for them to get up in the morning, when their Bank Account, weather and the bonkers (and scarcely believable headlines in the 'Daily Newspapers'), suggest otherwise!
Scottish Pubs ARE a truly great thing and there are many cases where 'people' should come before 'profit'. If a place is a vital cog in the community or it might even be the lifeblood of the entire place, it needs to be a 'thing', even if it's not that viable, on a spreadsheet.
If you go on holiday, to European Cities, you see loads of no-frills, subsidided places, (usually, the next couple of streets up from Tourism spots), where cheap drink and tasty grub are there, for a Community.
It's also a 'thing', even in Scotland. When I lived in Edinburgh, there was a Kurdish 'club', where people came together in a very non-threatening way (It was TOTALLY inclusive, I used to go there), to get together, curb loneliness, watch footie, eat amazing but basic food and drink beer, tea or juice, without the Barman having to worry about the Financial Director being on their case, to sell more of their Lager.
There used to be cheap 'clubs' all over Scotland, there should be again. Not to encourage drunkeness, (you might not drink much, or, at all) or to build property potfolios but to encourage Community. By 'Community', I DON'T mean 'people just like us'.
Communities change.
Imagine being the owner of Glasgow's First Indian Restaurant, when people who 'don't like Foreign Food' spurned you? Or the first Italian place in Inverness, where folk had no idea what Olive Oil, on the table, was for?
There are also LOADS of 'Scottish Societies', all over the World. Nobody in their right mind would ever accuse them of being insular, listening to threatening music, eating odd stuff, speaking Gaelic to each other and dressing differently, in kilts, in a way that scares old and sensitive people.
We're losing focus on the very place we stay in and its not about 'taking back our country'. It's about visiting places that are different, learning and evolving.
Community. We need to address the REAL meaning of the word.

Irish Hospitality-More evidence of dynamic pricing…
RTE reports that “an analysis carried out by KHSK Economic Consultants of the six largest hotels within 1km of a planned hotel for Upper Baggot Street, it found that hotels were charging on average €373 per night per their cheapest double room on the day of the event compares to €288 per night one week earlier”
It’s a nasty practice from an industry currently out with the begging bowl for reduced VAT. It’s gouging plain and simple by hotels, airlines etc.
Australia has shown the way with an investigation to ban “dynamic gouging”. Where’s the Irish Government on this?
I've been playing golf in Sussex for the last 7/8 years - I'm very often the only POC on the course and almost always the only POC at any corporate golf event. Some of the 'incidents' I've experienced over that time on reflection have been outright racism (don't call me Tiger Woods please, its boring now).
Last week was the first time I have ever played without that narrative (because I arranged it) and it poses a big question.
Where’s the Diversity in Golf?
Corporate Golf is often seen as a cornerstone of corporate networking, but the lack of diversity is an issue that many are reluctant to address. Whether it's gender, race, or socioeconomic background, golf and particularly corporate golf events, remain strikingly homogenous.
To Businesses and Golf Clubs: What Are You Doing About It?
In a time where Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are at the forefront of corporate values, it’s astonishing to see such little progress in the world of golf. How can we promote inclusivity in the workplace but exclude it from the very spaces where business relationships are built?
Are you actively creating initiatives to diversify participation?
Do you have programs to introduce golf to underrepresented communities?
Are there mentorship opportunities within your corporate golf events for diverse employees?
If not, why not?
It’s time for businesses and golf clubs to step up and make meaningful changes. Diversity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity for growth, innovation and true inclusion.
The opportunity to transform the culture of corporate golf and make it a game for everyone is a challenge I'm not seeing anyone in Sussex really grab hold of.
