NASA Chief to Pilot Experimental 'Ultra-Short' Aircraft NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, 82, is set to take a groundbreaking flight in Electra's EL-2 Goldfinch this Sunday at 11:45 a.m. EST from Manassas Regional Airport. This hybrid-electric aircraft can take off and land in less than 150 feet - that's about the size of a soccer field! 🚀 Two-seat experimental prototype 🚀 Uses innovative blown-lift propulsion 🚀 10x range of traditional helicopters 🚀 70% lower operating costs compared to helicopters This flight is part of NASA's Advanced Aircraft Concepts for Environmental Sustainability (AACES) 2050 program, aimed at leading the way in aviation decarbonization. Electra hopes to develop a 9-passenger aircraft (EL9) by the end of the decade. Interesting fact: Nelson might be one of the last NASA administrators to do this, as he's likely to be replaced by Jared Isaacman in the coming months.

NASA Unveils the Successor to Ingenuity Remember the tiny Martian helicopter Ingenuity? NASA is preparing its replacement! The new Mars Chopper is comparable in size to an SUV and is equipped with 36 blades — nine times more than its predecessor. With these upgrades, the new aircraft will be capable of transporting scientific equipment weighing up to 5 kilograms over distances of up to 3 kilometers in a single Martian day. “Scientists will be able to use the Chopper for fast and detailed exploration of vast areas, including regions inaccessible to rovers.”

NASA Is Considering Building a Floating Train on the Moon The possibility of creating a space station on the Moon poses some logistical challenges for agencies such as NASA, which is why infrastructures such as the Flexible Levitation on a Track (FLOAT) system are being considered. This project, currently being evaluated by NASA, aims to build a floating railway line on the surface of the Moon that would be able to provide “reliable, autonomous and efficient transportation of goods” on our natural satellite. Naturally, this system would be of crucial importance in the daily operations of astronauts who might inhabit a station on the Moon. The project is described on NASA's official website, where it is stated that the railway would use “magnetic robots” that would be capable of transporting more than 100 tons of goods over “multiple kilometers per day”. Of course, it is not known whether this FLOAT project will become a reality, but given that NASA intends to take astronauts to the surface of the Moon in 2026, it is likely that we will hear news about future projects in the next few years. https://ift.tt/iwxEreS

NASA is building a future where humans aren't the only ones going to space. They're sending autonomous robots. They're laying the groundwork for a long-term lunar presence. Why, you ask? ↳ The goal is to develop the tech needed for journeys to Mars and beyond. But here's the catch. If we want astronauts to spend extended periods on the moon and Mars, We need infrastructure. Building all this on Earth and shipping it to space? ↳ It's a pricey proposition. So, NASA is taking a different route. They're designing a robotic system to autonomously construct these structures. It's a new era in space exploration. Robots, building our future homes in space.

Again the trend of " software the eternal bunny" continues. Even NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is not an exception. Sadly the fact can only as good as it 's requirements is never highlighted .. In this case one can easily see that the requirements does not capture the uncommon uniform terrain at some Martian locations " The crash occurred when the helicopter lost stabilization mid-maneuver due to the uniform Martian terrain, which hindered its navigation system" .. well , I know not everyone will nod to the above but yet software engineer in me can not but state the obvious..
