Learning venture as an Angel Investor too often means writing a $10k check and waiting 10 years to see if you made the right decision. That's analogous to learning to play poker with real chips at the casino. My advice for investors starting out: 1/ Take your time: Get lots of reps, see tons of deals, be stingy to write checks. Invest only if you have conviction. 2/ Find your tribe: Build a small, trusted investor circle. Surround yourself with people who will challenge your thinking. 3/ Think in probabilities: Venture is more than just how many deals you do. Your thesis decisions, investment vehicle, diligence skill are all ways to move the odds in your favor.

"[VCs] can go after the power law, but also evolve into great fund managers and use secondaries as a sustainable solution to these structural issues [around liquidity]." On the latest Business Breakdowns podcast by Colossus, Ravi Viswanathan discusses the growing opportunity in venture secondaries. From day one, venture secondaries have been central to our flexible capital strategy. But the market was nascent when NewView Capital was founded in 2018. It’s since grown exponentially—driven in part by cyclical factors, including the ongoing liquidity drought. In his conversation with Matthew Reustle, CFA, Ravi discusses why we believe that the opportunity is structural—not just cyclical—and our insights into venture secondary transactions today. In their conversation, Ravi and Matt also cover: ▪️ What motivates sellers and buyers in today’s market ▪️ Why intrinsic value is what matters—not “discounts” ▪️ How to overcome some of the complexities of secondary transactions in venture ▪️ Why NewView prioritizes being a value-additive investor ▪️ What we see for the future of venture secondaries Listen to the full episode at https://lnkd.in/euQtF_vp

To go down the VC route or not to go down the VC route? 🤔 Seeing all these big fundraising announcement as a Founder can often result in a bit of FOMO and feeling like the VC route is the only route to take. But that’s far from the truth. Only a small percentage of businesses are actually suited for VC investment. For the rest it can often be detrimental, according to Emma Steele. 👇 More on this in our latest 40 Minute Mentor episode over on Apple, Spotify or YouTube. #40MinuteMentor #VC #Investment #PurposeVsProfit

🌟 Often overlooked (but already well established fact), dispersion in venture capital (VC) is higher than any other asset class. 🌟 The difference between a top quartile or top decile VC manager and a bottom quartile or median manager can be staggering. Depending on the vintage year, this can mean achieving 30-40% IRR versus losing your money with a negative IRR over a decade. This stark contrast highlights why careful selection of VC managers is crucial. Investors should partner with experienced and proven investors in the VC space to maximize the likelihood of achieving superior returns. Great pod episode with Evan Finkel !
