After interviewing 1,329 self-made millionaires and billionaires since 1984, one of the lessons they taught me was how to earn solid gains in equities and transfer the profits to safe havens. And then rinse, wash and repeat. This is a moderate risk growth strategy that bolsters your portfolio while simultaneously allowing you to sleep through the night. The first step is to learn how Wall Street works, and I explain in this video. #personaldevelopment #howrichpeoplethink #criticalthinking #mentaltoughness

There's an art to investor letters that goes beyond balance sheets and portfolio picks. Giverny Capital Inc annual letter is a masterstroke I look forward to each year. It’s a showcase of humility and education, designed not just to inform, but to build a bridge of trust through transparency and long-term vision. What truly sets it apart is the individual flair. In their delightful tradition, artwork adorns the cover, the "podium of errors" humbly spotlights mistakes, and straightforward analysis sheds light on key holdings. Such candour is a cornerstone of true insight. I'm drawn to Giverny's values: treating clients as partners, as equals, with the fundamental belief that their money should be managed as meticulously as their own. It’s an ethos that resonates with me deeply, reinforcing that the true measure of investment success is as much about character and principles as it is about percentages and profit. This year’s letter holds a special significance, marking the 30th anniversary of the Rochon Global Portfolio. It's a momentous occasion that reflects on past achievements and exemplifies the spectacular effects of consistent investing over time. Decades of disciplined strategy, patience, and adaptability are captured in these pages, offering an instructive and inspiring narrative. #InvestorLetters #Communication #InvestmentPhilosophy

In one of our recent LP Perspective interviews, Daniel Kylander, a member of the Church Commissioners for England’s Private Equity Investment Team, shared valuable insights on some of the most common brand missteps that GPs make. He highlighted a recurring phenomenon: rapid team expansion, significant fund size growth, or shifting a mandate’s core geographic or sector focus. His key takeaway? It’s better to understand your expertise and avoid becoming a "jack of all trades, master of none." Read the full interview by clicking the first link in the comments below. #privateequity #marketing

This week I listened to Howard Marks' Oaktree Capital Management, L.P. Memo titled "The Folly of Certainty". It is a must listen for any business owners or those in the acquisition space. A couple of key points: 1. Predicting the future is folly. 2. Basing any decisions on a predicted future is asking for trouble. Howard used the comment by Biden's campaign manager prior to the debacle of a debate with Trump where she unequivocally said "Biden will win". No caveats. Just certainty. This not only turned out to be wrong but catastrophically wrong given his withdrawal from the race. Notwithstanding the constant reminder that predictions about the future or forecasts are almost always fraught with danger, our society and especially the markets love this forward looking folly. It reminded me of the warning in the biblical parable in Luke 12 where the rich farmer relies on the future forecast to make decisions which ultimately are meaningless as he dies without seeing any fruit from his labour. There is a certain futility to forecasts that should be understood and a certain utility to the reader of a forecast that can demonstrate, by virtue of assumptions and caveats, as to the capability of the forecaster. I am going to suggest the forecast reveals much more about the forecaster than it does about the subject of the forecast in most cases. #businessgrowth #forecast #oaktree #capitalmanagement

🌟 Upcoming Luncheon: December 4th 🌟 The Boston Economic Club is excited to host a fireside chat with Professor John Coates of Harvard Law School, who will explore the themes of his latest book, 'The Problem of Twelve: When a Few Financial Institutions Control Everything.' In this thought-provoking discussion, moderated by Patrick Donlon, CFA, CAIA, CFP of Fiduciary Trust Company, Professor Coates will unpack the profound shifts reshaping American capitalism: ➡️ The concentration of corporate voting power in the Big Four index funds—Vanguard, State Street, Fidelity, and BlackRock—holding sway over more than 25% of the votes in nearly all listed companies. ➡️ The rise of the Big Four private equity firms—Apollo, Blackstone, Carlyle, and KKR—amassing $2.7 trillion in assets, taking companies private, and removing them from public accountability. This quiet but transformative evolution has far-reaching implications for our economy, society, and governance. With high attendance expected, this will be an incredible way to close out the 2024 luncheon season. We’re thrilled to bring our members together for such a timely and impactful discussion and look forward to carrying this momentum into 2025. #BostonEconomicClub #FinancialInnovation #CorporateGovernance #AmericanEconomy #PrivateEquity #IndexFunds
