Today, we honor and thank our 🎖️ veterans for their courage, dedication, and sacrifice. They have given so much to serve our country, protecting our 🦅 freedoms and strengthening our communities every day. Many veterans continue to serve their communities even after their military service, and they deserve our support in return. 🪖🤝 Yet, veterans often face difficult challenges in accessing everyday legal help—whether it’s family law matters, securing stable housing, or navigating public benefits. 🏠⚖️ According to LSC’s 2022 Justice Gap report, low-income veterans and other military personnel received inadequate or no legal help for 84% of their problems! Basic legal help on everyday legal matters should be accessible to our veterans—instead, the legal system is shutting millions of Americans out. At Frontline Justice, we’re committed to raising awareness of how much more support our sailors and soldiers could receive if states adopted veteran-friendly unauthorized practice of law regulations. With these changes, we could help more veterans access the essential legal support they need. 💙❤️🤍 #VeteransDay #ThankYouVeterans #AccessToJustice #SupportingOurHeroes

On this Veterans Day, I find myself reflecting on a meaningful training I attended at William James College, Suicide Prevention for Military Veterans Through Lethal Means Counseling. This training provided invaluable insights into the importance of safely storing firearms as part of suicide prevention efforts for Veterans. While firearms are often handled responsibly, they can become deadly if a Veteran in crisis has easy access to one. Many suicidal crises are brief, and safe storage practices have the potential to save lives by increasing the time and distance between someone experiencing a crisis and access to a firearm. This simple but powerful step can make a difference, giving time for support and intervention. #Veteransday #suicideprevention #support #love

Harris County Sheriff's Office Texas Veterans Commission Harris County Veterans Services Department VA MEDICAL CENTER, HOUSTON Thanks to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Reentry Services, HCSO teammates, and a variety of expert community stakeholders, we already have a 72 man unit at Harris County Jail that has been in place since 2019 to assist justice involved veterans (JIVs). Eligibility, accountability, peer support, education on resources, and accessing those resources upon release from incarceration is top priority! Additionally, if convicted, we educate JIVs on how to access veteran programs in prison and about apportionment for families (based on need) so they don’t have to rely on civilian social services while their veteran remains incarcerated. How did this begin? When engaging veterans in our custody on a large scale in late 2018, approximately 75% of the 185+ veterans identified/engaged (not including 48 who were participating in available programs at the time) thought they did not qualify, did not know they were eligible, had never signed up for eligibility, nor had they engaged the VA/community resources. Recently, our Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) JIV Claims Advisor informed us that in 2017, approximately 98% of JIVs were being denied service connection claims simply because they were detained and not able to make their appointments. They were charged, not yet convicted, and facing a multitude of challenges waiting for their day in court. In August 2022, Sheriff Gonzalez officially permitted Compensation & Pension (C&P exams) assessments to be conducted onsite or via telehealth. This was a first in Texas at the county jail level! Now, not only are JIVs tracking with those veterans who are not incarcerated, but there are 20+ county jails following our lead! Why is this important? It’s simple. They can now seek viable veteran-specific medical and mental health services that were not accessible before they were incarcerated. Another benefit, we collaborate with Felony Veterans Treatment Court for those that are eligible. It’s a wonderful program for those selected, but space is limited for the 18-24 month program. Perhaps if we had more VJOs available for jail inreach and treatment court, they could accept more veterans into the program. Female veterans receive services one-on-one and would benefit from having their own dorm. We just don’t have the numbers at this time to accommodate their housing needs. What I love most about our community experts, they engage our HCSO veteran teammates too! They really do help all veterans, incarcerated or not. We’ve created the space and set the pace for the experts to come into our facilities to assist these individuals needing a hand up! The below article from the Council on Criminal Justice is on point. Thank you for highlighting this important topic! #BrothersinArms #Reentry #justiceinvolvedveterans #traumainformedcare #HCSOproud #LiftWhereWeStand #ChallengeAccepted #JIVadvocate
CCJ’s Veterans Justice Commission conducted a series of listening sessions with justice-involved veterans to discuss their experience in the justice system and their transition from the military to civilian life. In addition to citing the challenges related to service-related trauma, many participants expressed difficulties with securing housing, employment, and financial stability. Those who had limited work experience before serving and/or experienced injuries while serving reported the most arduous struggles. Read their stories at: https://lnkd.in/gSifYrYq

🟢 | EXPERT ANALYSIS: Our #ConstitutionalReformsGuide features new content: “Negative Outlook for the National Guard Reform” by Vidal Romero! “This expansion of formal military power is mirrored by an informal process of militarizing state and municipal police forces, with many commanders coming from the Army and Navy. While this has led to greater alignment across various levels of government in combating organized crime, the substantive results do not suggest a reduction in crime rates. Moreover, this alignment has come with significant opportunity costs, including a relative decrease in attention and budget for addressing ordinary crimes that directly impact most citizens." 🇲🇽 👉 https://lnkd.in/eHWA25XY #ConstitutionalReforms #PublicSecurity #NationalGuard #MexicanArmedForces #SecurityPolicy
