The shift towards software defined services will, as intended, bring significant commercial impact. Where at the same time, there'll be a shift to and greater dependency on, the mega-suppliers or resellers thereof. Moving towards utility pricing models under "as a service" banners. Enabling organisations to flex in a more dynamic and cost effective way. Allowing organisations to be leaner in how they deploy and manage apps. Fundamentally morphing benefits back into core business investment. All of which needs two fundamental additions: commercial controls and measures. Might sound overly strict but things left loose rarely return promise! Why? Because without that protection your business will be at the behest of third party control. Their standards, their reporting and their costs. Sure if required, you may be able to get yourself out but it'll cost. Once through termination, then again in onboarding or developing alternatives. All avoidable with upfront due diligence, crafting and management of agreements you're confident can work. Knowing your commitment boundaries are safe, that change is manageable and that flexibility to flip away if needed, exists and it's impacts understood. Even having that base focus is enough to alert the supplier you're in control. Without it, what you get is up to them and it may not always be palatable!
