Yesterday’s panels at the Gender Equal Financing Conference 2024, moderated by Perry V. My Reflections…. Men in Nigeria may be paying lip service to empowering Women for several reasons. Firstly, there could be societal norms and traditional beliefs that still prioritize men's roles and positions over women's. Even though there is a growing awareness of the importance of gender equality, deep-rooted patriarchal attitudes can still influence men to only verbally support women's empowerment without taking concrete actions. Secondly, some men may see women's empowerment as a threat to their own positions of power and privilege. By simply paying lip service to the idea of empowering women, they can appear progressive without actually challenging the existing power dynamics that benefit them. Additionally, there may be a lack of genuine understanding of what women's empowerment entails and its benefits to society as a whole. Men might talk about empowering women without fully comprehending the systemic barriers and injustices that women face on a daily basis. In summary, men in Nigeria might be paying lip service to empowering women due to entrenched gender norms, fear of losing privilege, and a lack of deep understanding of the issues. Real progress towards gender equality will require men to move beyond empty rhetoric and actively support policies and initiatives that promote women's empowerment. All I can think about is how Women always get the short end of the stick and men constantly justifying why it has to be so! Right now all we see, know and understand is that… “They Don’t Really Care About Us” ‘…tell us what has become of our Rights? On Women’s Equality Day, August 26th, I had the honor of connecting with some of the most remarkable women I know, including my fellow TechWomen alumni. This day serves as a powerful reminder that gender equality transcends mere access to opportunities; it’s also about celebrating and respecting the diverse paths that women choose for themselves. I was deeply inspired by these incredible women, especially Asna Javed and Sadia Bashir. Asna is making groundbreaking strides in Pakistan's IT industry, overcoming significant challenges as a differently-abled individual. Her journey is a testament to resilience and innovation. Sadia, on the other hand, exemplifies the delicate balance of managing a successful career while nurturing a loving family. Their lives are a beacon of inspiration, and I am personally in awe of their achievements. Here are some key lessons I’ve learned from our meeting: 1. Embrace Self-Acceptance Asna’s journey underscores the importance of self-acceptance. In a patriarchal society, embracing self-love and authenticity can be challenging. 2. Defy Expectations Women are frequently burdened by societal expectations and regulations designed for their ‘well-being.’ However, true equality involves breaking free from these constraints and honoring the individual choices and aspirations of women. 3. Celebrate Diverse Paths Women’s contributions and experiences are diverse. Whether it’s making significant advances in a field like IT or successfully balancing work and family, every woman’s journey is unique and deserving of recognition. 4. Pursue Passion with Resilience Both Asna and Sadia demonstrate that pursuing one's passion requires resilience. Read my recent opinion column at the Manila Bulletin, titled: “THE TRUE CORNERSTONE OF EMPOWERMENT IS KINDNESS” The discussion surrounding women’s empowerment is wide-ranging and deep with layers of many truths. It involves diverse issues and opportunities that impact the lives of women across the globe. From addressing systemic barriers to promoting women’s rights in various spheres of society, the dialogue delves into complex socio-economic, cultural, and political dynamics. Feminism encompasses advocating for policies and initiatives that enhance women’s access to education, healthcare, economic resources, and leadership roles, while also challenging harmful stereotypes, discriminatory practices, and unequal power dynamics that hinder their advancement. The conversation often intersects with broader movements for social justice, human rights, and sustainable development, highlighting the interconnectedness of gender equality with subjects like poverty alleviation, environmental sustainability, and peacebuilding. Woman empowerment is indeed an ongoing and ever-evolving endeavor. The United Nations (UN) Women would annually convene a high-level panel of diverse leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, experts, and activists, to deliberate on how social protection can be harnessed to promote gender equality. The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) summit is held every March, at the UN headquarters in New York. This year, the Department of Budget and Management Secretary Mina F. Pangandaman is the head delegate of the Philippines for the 68th CSW. I am honored to support Secretary Mina in representing our country at the ongoing summit in New York in what is considered the UN’s most significant gathering on women’s empowerment. As part of the entourage, taking part in the activities and talks with the diplomats, I found that it is easy to get lost in all the technicalities involved in defining and crafting policies that would empower women. There are the finer details, of course, but I believe it is equally vital to look at the bigger picture. The UAE’s decision to mandate private companies to reserve board seats for women is a groundbreaking move that highlights the country’s commitment to gender equality in leadership. As a woman, this is an empowering step that sets a powerful example for the world. Unlike the UAE, where this mandate actively pushes for female representation, the U.S. lacks federal requirements for gender diversity on corporate boards, relying mainly on voluntary initiatives and state-level efforts like those in California. The UAE’s policy shows how proactive measures can accelerate change, driving economic growth and empowering women to lead. This policy is a call for the U.S. to consider similar mandates, ensuring women have equal opportunities in decision-making roles, which not only benefits businesses but society as a whole. Honoured to have been part of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Compilation of the Zimbabwe Beijing+30 Report. Noting also that our Min. Of Women Affairs Hon. M. Mutsvangwa will be chairing the SADC organ on Gender this July. Zimbabwe as a signatory to the Beijing Declaration committed itself to implementing the objectives and targets outlined in the Platform for Action. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will, in March 2025 undertake a review and appraisal for progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to accelerate the realisation of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. The anniversary will also be an opportunity to strengthen gender-responsive action and implementation of the Agenda 2030 and other global commitments e.g. UNSCR1325 and Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Therefore, leading up to the anniversary, all nations are expected to conduct comprehensive national level review processes led by the government and involving strategic stakeholders like UN entities, CSOs, private sector etc. in the same manner, Zimbabwe is required to compile a National +30 Beijing report. This comprehensive national-level review of the progress made and challenges encountered in the implementation. This national report will consolidate the trends, achievements, remaining gaps and challenges, as well as future plans to accelerate the implementation of the Beijing Declaration at national level. This Beijing +30 Zimbabwe Report will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, govt agencies, CSOs and other stakeholders involved in promoting gender equality and women's empowerment. It will provide evidence based insights, practical recommendations, and a roadmap for future actions to accelerate progress towards gender equality in Zimbabwe. I'm conclusion, the Beijing +30 Zimbabwe report also fulfils Zimbabwe's accountability role of reporting on normative standards and it was identified as one of the actions points in implementing CSW 68 recommendations as well as part of CSW 69 preparations.
