Netflix's approach to "Griselda" showcases a strategic pivot from its predecessor "Narcos," blending bold casting with a narrative twist that captivated new audiences. Here's how they did it: ❄️ Unexpected casting: Sofia Vergara, known for her comedic role in "Modern Family," was cast as Griselda, drawing significant attention and broadening the show's appeal. ❄️ Narrative focus: Shifting from a traditional crime story, "Griselda" emphasized themes of feminism and motherhood, portraying Griselda Blanco in a more relatable light. ❄️ Audience expansion: This strategy retained the existing "Narcos" audience and attracted a new demographic, particularly women over 35, expanding the show's reach. ❄️ Promotional creativity: Innovative marketing, such as the controversial "snorting truck" campaign in Paris, generated buzz and captured the audience's curiosity. Result? "Griselda" became a top-watched show in over 89 countries during its first week, proving that a well-thought-out strategy can redefine success in the crowded streaming landscape. We may not see it on "reality tv," but IRL, we are living in a time of genocide. And unfortunately, Pitzer is complicit in the Israeli state's genocide against Palestinians--as Pitzer continues to partner with Israeli universities that are pillars of the Israeli state's denial of Palestinian freedom (See Maya Wind, *Towers of Ivory & Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom*). But Pitzer's great students have voted 34-1 in the Student Senate to end this complicity and Pitzer's great alums are backing them up by pledging loyalty to Pitzer's social justice mission--by taking this "no donation until BDS" pledge: https://lnkd.in/guXjPYq5 And if you are a Pitzer alum, you can take the pledge also. And it will feel so good acting for social justice against an administration-trustees that have betrayed Pitzer's radical roots.

⚡ Khaby Lame Is ‘Coming to America’ in a Tubi Star Vehicle. 🇺🇸 The most-followed creator on TikTok, who reaches more than 162 million followers with his wordless comedy videos, is the star of a new Tubi series. Khaby Is Coming To America is a three-part travel show that depicts its titular star’s travels across the United States. Each 20-minute episode of Khaby Is Coming To America takes place in a different U.S. city. Lame’s Tubi show contains the hallmarks of a typical travelogue: There are quirky local characters, regional delicacies, famous locations, and guest appearances from notable residents of the chosen cities. 🌟 The most-followed TikToker goes on a travel show across the U.S. with guest appearances from David Beckham, Alicia Keys and many others. I definitely think that could work for Tubi. As mentioned above, Tubi is popular with Gen Z and so is Khaby of course. But adding mainstream celebs and a title that harkens back to the Eddie Murphy film from 1988, could make it appeal to a broader audience. And as many other creators, Khaby’s dream is to become a Hollywood Star. Identity can mean different things to different people. Films and shows are often the first idea we get about people outside of our own communities. 🎬 But how accurate is the representation of modern Australia that we see on our screens? 🎭 In this episode of 'Who We Are,' I spoke to writer and broadcaster Benjamin Law, independent filmmaker Joy Hopwood and academic Jay Song. The events arising after the release of the Netflix series are almost as good as the series itself! If, like me, you find it all fascinating then have a read of my colleague, Kerrie’s article.
If you haven’t seen the most watched Netflix series, well, where have you been? The hit show Baby Reindeer and its alleged true story has been seen by millions across the world. Kerrie Duffy dives into the legal issues regarding the show and whether it really is defamatory or not: https://lnkd.in/euq5iXqU #GardnerLeader #BabyReindeer #Netflix

Cillian Murphy accepts the Best Actor award for “Oppenheimer” onstage during the 96th Annual Academy Awards at Dolby Theatre on March 10, 2024 in Hollywood, California. Kevin Winter | Getty Images Entertainment | Getty Images “Barbenheimer” brought a bump not a boom to Oscars ratings. An estimated 19.5 million people watched Sunday night’s 96th Academy Awards ceremony on ABC. That’s the biggest number drawn by the telecast in four years. But that upward trend comes from an all-time low during the pandemic, and is up just 4% from last year’s estimated audience of 18.7 million, according to numbers released Monday by ABC. The Academy experimented with starting this year’s show an hour earlier, and for the first time in years had many nominations for huge hit movies that viewers had actually seen — “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” The viewership peaked in the final half hour, when the audience saw Ryan Gosling perform “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie,” saw Cillian Murphy win best actor and Christopher Nolan win best director for “Oppenheimer,” and Al Pacino give the film the best picture Oscar in an odd presentation. A major star, Emma Stone, also won best actress in the final stretch in the the night’s most competitive race over Lily Gladstone, and an estimated 21 million people saw her do it. Last year’s big Oscar winner, “Everything, Everywhere All at Once,” was hardly a slouch at the box office, bringing in $143 million globally. But that’s nothing like the “Barbenheimer” juggernaut, with “Oppenheimer” approaching a billion global dollars and “Barbie” surpassing it. But they didn’t yield the same ballooning numbers for the show that the Academy and ABC might have hoped for. For many years, the Oscars were often the second most-watched television program of the year behind the Super Bowl. Until 2018, the Oscar telecast had never slipped below 30 million viewers, according to Nielsen records. The high-water mark was the 55 million people who watched “Titanic” clean up in 1998. From the 43.7 million who watched in 2014, viewership declined steadily to 26.5 million in 2018, then went back up to 29.6 million in 2019, and 23.6 million in 2020. The bottom fell out with the pandemic-diminished show in 2021, seen by 9.85 million. It began rebounding in 2022 — the year of the Slap — with 16.6 million. Source link

Recently there has been much in the trade papers about the state of film and television production in relation to the health of those companies engaged in ‘streaming’ operations and what is produced. I am no industry ‘expert’, but I have read a lot of scripts and worked on many films over the past decades. Here is a personal observation. Take from it what you will. The core business of Film and Television is telling stories. From the earliest silent movies, to what you might see in VR goggles, the aim is the same. Entertain and make money. William Goldman wrote “Nobody knows anything...... Not one person in the entire motion picture field knows for a certainty what's going to work. Every time out it's a guess and, if you're lucky, an educated one.” I would add to that, “a compelling story, well told with solid characters, in the hands of an experienced ensemble of film makers.” Then you roll the dice. A film is a piece of chemistry. The ingredients and how you mix them, is really key. To allow those magical moments we experience when watching, listening, thinking, and remembering. We all know the moment when the hairs on the back of the neck rise as your imagination starts that rollercoaster. We have no more run out of great stories to tell than musicians have run out of notes to compose songs. Finding the stories is now swamped by how they might be monetized before recognising if the story is good or not. So how do makers of stories proceed? The analysis of what the audience wants to watch, with committees of decision-makers driving that process, would appear to have led to the loss of individuality in current produced film and TV. What does the ‘collective audience’ want? How is that defined anyway? Did an audience know it wanted a story about corruption in the water business in 1930’s LA? Or the story of a one-armed veteran, taking a medal of valour back to the father who lost his son in the 2nd world War? Or the story of a group of unemployed middle-aged men forming a dance and strip ensemble? We have no more run out of great stories to tell than musicians have run out of notes to compose songs. I recognise that is Show Business and not Show Friends, but to paraphrase Phil Alden Robinson. “ If you write it, they will come.” On a lighter note, ban the words awesome, and cool from script meetings.
