Due to its extraordinarily diverse demography (85% of its resident population comes from over 200 countries), Dubai has become a culinary hub unparalleled anywhere else on the planet. Painstakingly created and developed over the past half-century by talented cooks and chefs from all nationalities, with the initial aim of feeding their own communities with “food from home”, today’s culinary landscape is as ethnic and authentic as it is varied and diverse. In fact, stringent quality control standards and the use of the best ingredients have resulted in many expats saying that they prefer the food in Dubai to their home countries. Only in Dubai, no more than a 20-minute drive separates Iraqi, Persian, Lebanese, Syrian, Emirati, Saudi, Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, and Afghani restaurants of the highest level. It is, without doubt, the last undiscovered culinary destination in the world.   Since the depth and vastness of Dubai’s culinary world seem endless, I believe that this “Best of Dubai’s Food 101” introductory tour will be the first of many.

A few days ago an article in News Paper talked about the famous Restaurant Chain of Dubai called Eat & Drink Restaurants closing down it’s oldest branch due building demolition. It got me thinking about this amazing business model where a very straightforward named Restaurant “EAT & DRINK” changed the industry. Started by late Mr VP Abdulla Mahmood in 1982 this chain is 4 decades old and know for its - 📌great tasting Fast Foods (Save Time but give Quality) 📌 mix of American, Middle Eastern & South Indian Cusine. (Target Mases) 📌simple setup & right locations ( Market Reach & Low Cost) 📌friendly people & good service (Build Relationships) Created the most profitable business of so called Cafeterias. They kept growing over and over again later becoming the sort of business model for 5000 plus Brands & Outlets of Cafeterias that now dominate the UAE #foodservice business. "Do you think Dubai is on its way to becoming the best food city in the world?" Jenny Hewett asked me this very valid question recently for her article on MSN. Here's what I replied, a gist of which made it to her final article— "‘Best’ is a term I shy away from using with food because taste is inherently subjective. But I do think we are already one of the most, if not *the* most, diverse food cities in the world in terms of cultural representation, pricing spectrum and availability of global versus homegrown brands. Being a younger city, Dubai has more legroom than others to stretch and shape its image as a food destination while keeping other established templates in mind. Tokyo and Paris, for instance, already have their reputations and brands as food cities cut in stone—and these are not the easiest places I’d imagine to come in as a new entrant and make your culinary mark. But with Dubai, if you’re a chef or restaurateur with a vision, there’s more room for you to experiment. People will take notice and you can be part of creating our Dubai food brand because it’s being ‘baked’ right now as we eat." What are your thoughts?
