Reflect – Remediate – Renew – the year that was 2024. Short version? Lots of change = lots of good, & reflection's been a recurring theme (ELF + CSIRO +…) *Reflect* - workwise, I think researchers are lucky that, despite exploration of the unknown being literally inherent to the job, the continual upheaval actually offers us constant opportunities to reflect on what matters to us. Simply put, for me its collaborating with “good apples” to create meaningful real-world improvements across all areas of health, & that has been the absolute centre of my days this year. Lifewise, my increased flexibility in 2024 has made life not just easier to manage but enhanced the quality of my relationships with friends & family. Yes running my own business full-time obv requires strange hours & intense multitasking, but then so has every other role I’ve held for >15yrs, & 2024's been significantly less stressful! *Remediate* - adjusting to 100% WFH instead of 50/50 has been a bit strange – throwback to thesis writing! - but perfect for regenerating energy after a tough few years of work overload & increasingly bad sleep, diet, & (lack of) exercise to compensate. Research’s specifications haven’t minimised by any means, but optimising my input is significantly easier within better-suited systems. Being more virtual I align my scheduled meetings better, am more efficient, & have been able to contribute (whether large or small) to so many more ideas this year, helping trailblazers leverage their concepts into real-life change. I fall asleep much more satisfied with my days, wear “office” clothes that are much more me after some long overdue expert fashion advice, & have started running again which I love. My chocolate intake is still a work in progress, but admittedly I may not have been working too hard on that one! 😜 *Renew* - meeting so many more awesome people in the course of my consulting, from across the world, over multiple disciplines, & every “role” you can think of, has been integral to revitalising my sense of self in my “calling” & indeed in being proud to call myself a researcher. Health, of all fields, is largely driven by a need to make a difference, to leave the world a better place, as my old team & co-collaborators over many projects absolutely embodied. Researchers do so amidst often (unfortunately) adverse conditions including low funding, short contracts, & changing political goals, but should stand proud of what they accomplish on behalf of the broader community – local, national, & global too. Meeting, connecting with, & both initiating new collaborations & renewing old ones with others that feel the same way, has renewed my faith in this foundation. Though that does remind me I need to update my website with my current range of activities! With 2025 soon rolling around I am looking forward to more. To more innovation, to more impact, & to more “good apples” bearing the torch for the next generation of change. My pic, Grampians

📱💻 Are you feeling overwhelmed by the constant connectivity and digital fatigue caused by our reliance on technology? 🤯 Don't worry, you're not alone! In this post, I'm going to share some valuable tips on how to manage technology overload and find balance in this digital age. 🌐✨ Let's dive right in! 💦 First, it's important to recognize the impact that technology has on our lives. While it brings numerous benefits, such as instant communication and access to information, it can also lead to feelings of overwhelm and exhaustion. 😩 One effective way to combat technology overload is to set boundaries. 🚫⏰ Create designated "tech-free" zones or times in your day where you disconnect from your devices. This could be during meals, before bed, or even for a few hours on the weekends. 🍽️🛌 Trust me, giving yourself a break from screens will do wonders for your mental well-being. Another helpful strategy is to prioritize your online activities. 📝💪 Take a step back and assess which apps, websites, or social media platforms truly add value to your life. Trim down your digital commitments and focus on what truly matters to you. Remember, quality over quantity! ⭐ Now, let's talk about the importance of self-care. 🧘♀️🌸 It's easy to get caught up in the never-ending cycle of notifications and emails, but taking care of yourself should always come first. Make time for activities that recharge you, whether it's going for a walk in nature, practicing mindfulness, or indulging in a hobby you love. 🌳🎨 While we're on the topic of self-care, don't forget to give your eyes and body a break from screens. 👀💪 Incorporate regular breaks into your workday, where you stretch, move around, and rest your eyes from the constant glare of your devices. Your body will thank you! 🙌💤 Lastly, remember that technology should be a tool to enhance your life, not control it. 🛠️🌟 Take control of your digital habits and use technology intentionally. Ask yourself, "Is this activity bringing me joy or adding value?" If the answer is no, it may be time to reevaluate how you spend your time online. ⏳🤔 In conclusion, managing technology overload is all about finding balance and setting boundaries. By prioritizing self-care, reassessing your online commitments, and using technology intentionally, you can regain control over your digital life and reduce digital fatigue. 💪✨ Are you ready to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of emerging technologies? The antidote to digital fatigue = disconnecting from technology. 4 methods to disconnect from tech & recharge: In today's world of hyper-connectivity, information overload & digital addiction have become the norm. The relentless 24/7 news cycle, social media echo chambers, and "always on" work culture weigh heavily on our well-being. Plus, cancel culture & online pile-ons have created a climate of fear, where one misstep can destroy reputations and livelihoods. This stifles authenticity, nuance, and healthy dialogue. You should frequently step away from all of that to preserve your sanity. Here's how: 🔹 1. Set Strict Daily Offline Hours Carve out 2-3 hours each day to completely unplug from all devices. Ideal times are the first hour upon waking, during meals, and the final hour before bed. Daily offline hours create a routine around unplugging; the benefits will compound over time. 🔹 2. Create Sacred Tech-Free Spaces Designate specific areas of your home as device-free oases. The bedroom, dining room, and bathroom are prime candidates. Remove all screens (TVs, computers, tablets, phones) from these spaces to turn them into tranquil sanctuaries. 🔹 3. Plan Regular Extended Tech Sabbaticals Schedule one full day every week where you forgo all forms of technology. Level up to a full-weekend digital detox once per quarter. And if you want to take it further, schedule annual trips to nature and seclusion. Use this time to nurture your most important relationships and reconnect with yourself. 🔹 4. Replace Screen Time with Nourishing Activities Reclaim your offline hours with analog hobbies that ground you in the real world. Read for pleasure, take up an instrument, enjoy cooking, or explore your artistic side. Plus, savor unmediated human interaction through tech-free activities like hikes, board game nights & intimate heart-to-hearts. Digital detox is no longer a luxury—it's necessary to maintain our sanity in the face of technological overwhelm. But unlearning digital dependency is a process. Start small, with brief daily pockets of tech-free time, then gradually expand your capacity. Schedule offline hours into your calendar to make them non-negotiable commitments. Remember, disconnecting from technology is ultimately about reconnecting to what matters most – yourself, your loved ones, and the real-world experiences that make life worth living. How Modern Life Contributes to Stress Modern life, with its fast pace, constant connectivity, and ever-increasing demands, has become a significant source of stress for many people. Here are some key factors that contribute to this: 1. Information Overload and Constant Connectivity: Social Media: The constant stream of information and comparisons on social media can create feelings of inadequacy and overwhelm. Digital Devices: Being constantly connected to work and personal emails can make it difficult to disconnect and relax. 2. Fast-Paced Lifestyle and Time Pressure: Work Demands: Long working hours, tight deadlines, and the pressure to be constantly productive can lead to stress. Multitasking: Attempting to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously can increase stress and reduce efficiency. 3. Financial Concerns: Rising Costs: The rising cost of living, student debt, and economic uncertainty can create financial stress. Job Insecurity: Fear of job loss or financial instability can contribute to anxiety and stress. 4. Social Isolation and Loneliness: Reduced Face-to-Face Interactions: Increased reliance on technology can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Work-Life Balance Issues: Difficulty in maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life can contribute to stress. 5. Environmental Factors: Pollution: Exposure to air pollution, noise pollution, and other environmental factors can negatively impact mental health. Climate Change: Concerns about climate change and its consequences can contribute to stress and anxiety. 6. Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices: Poor Diet: A diet high in processed foods and unhealthy fats can contribute to stress and anxiety. Lack of Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress, but many people struggle to find time for exercise. It's important to recognize the impact of modern life on stress and take steps to manage it. This may include practicing stress-reduction techniques, setting boundaries, and prioritizing self-care. #healthylife #stress #modernlife

I haven’t met a client, associate or anyone who isn’t overwhelmed in some capacity. Certainly not surprising in the world we live in. I can relate as I often feel that way. In the spirit of full transparency, I am your classic overachiever, with a strong work ethic and workaholic tendencies and am still challenged to get everything done. Anyone else feel that way? Exhausted after giving it your all and you still have a long list of projects to complete. We think we are resilient. Go to bed tired and wake up tired but get into work mode and do it all again. Why don’t we feel refreshed? Because that is not being resilient. ❇️ Resilience means working hard but it also requires that we stop, recover and then get back into hard work mode. Recovery is the key. It is important for our health but also preventing lower productivity which is counterintuitive to most. If I stop working and take a break from getting anything done, how I can possibly be productive?? ❇️ Because to build resilience you need to be willing to stop. Yes, to make the commitment to spend some time away from your phone, your computer, your desk and actually take the vacation time you were given. We have to change our perspective and see resilience through a different lens. ❇️ When you deprive yourself of recovery time you are actually holding yourself back from your ability to be resilient and successful. Your brain and body need recovery time to stay strong. Your lack of recovery can be lack of uninterrupted sleep, staying continuously stimulated by watching your phone or by working at home after a long day at the office. ❇️ The key to resilience is working hard, then stopping, recovering and then getting back to work. It is like building a new muscle and training it to protect your brain and body by allowing it to recover and be even more productive than you were before. ❇️ Rest and recovery are not the same thing. Stopping does not equal recovering. Start by taking a cognitive break (15 min) several times a day and start to recharge your batteries. There are apps you can use to help you unplug. Explore other ways you can bring balance to hard work and recovery. Let yourself feel rejuvenated and get ready to return to your performance zone! #buildresilience, #recoveryiskey, #increaseproductivity, #wellbeing

“𝐼𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡𝑙𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑, 𝑖𝑡’𝑠 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑦 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑓𝑎𝑢𝑙𝑡.” This quote from '𝑀𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒: 𝐻𝑜𝑤 𝑡𝑜 𝐹𝑜𝑐𝑢𝑠 𝑜𝑛 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑀𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝐷𝑎𝑦' by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky couldn’t be more accurate. Let’s face it—there’s so much to do. Books to read, presentations to prepare, tasks with deadlines. Then there’s your social life. You need to keep in touch with loved ones, manage your home, take care of the kids, do the school runs... The list never ends. And at the end of the day, you sit down and think, “What did I actually do today that left me so worn out?” You promise yourself to be more productive tomorrow. But here’s the truth: productivity isn’t the problem. Anyone handling what you do daily is already productive. In the book, John Zeratsky explains that trying to get more done doesn’t solve the problem. Instead, it creates a cycle. You finish tasks, only to make space for more. It’s like running on a hamster wheel—you’re moving faster, but not getting anywhere meaningful. The real solution is to make time for what matters. A friend reminded me of something one of our lecturers used to say: “𝐼𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑜 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑙𝑙 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑎 𝑤𝑎𝑦. 𝐼𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑡, 𝑦𝑜𝑢’𝑙𝑙 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛 𝑒𝑥𝑐𝑢𝑠𝑒.” So, instead of trying to do more, focus on breaking free from two big traps of modern life: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒖𝒔𝒚 𝑩𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒘𝒂𝒈𝒐𝒏. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒂 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒃𝒖𝒔𝒚—𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒔, 𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌-𝒕𝒐-𝒃𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝒎𝒆𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒋𝒂𝒎-𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒔. 𝑰𝒏𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑷𝒐𝒐𝒍𝒔. 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒔, 𝒔𝒐𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒌𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔. These traps make us feel overwhelmed and unfulfilled. Being productive or relying on willpower won’t fix this. The authors suggest a simple framework to take control and focus on what truly matters. The solution? Break the cycle. Here’s how: 𝑪𝒉𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔. 𝑫𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒅𝒂𝒚. 𝑪𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒃𝒚 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌 𝒐𝒓 𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒚. 𝑩𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚. 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒃𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒕𝒉. 𝑻𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒔, 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒚𝒐𝒖. Instead of doing more, do what matters. That’s the key to creating meaningful moments and breaking free from the chaos of modern life. Thank you Mercy Adebayo 🍀 for recommending this book. #49daysvalinkedinbootcampwithtma, #day11ofvalinkedinbootcamp #linkedinforcreators #focusonwhatmatters
