When did you learn the first time about coworking? It’s not something obvious. We didn’t grow up with it. Yes, it is more and more popular. But, no, it isn’t the norm. Most workers don’t go to a coworking space (yet). That’s why I’m fascinated by how we learn about it. It is an office. But not quite. And you, how did you learn about coworking? Nobody’s googling for a coworking space in a small town. Nobody expects one. If you want to work, you look for coffee shops. End of the story. Or is it? What if you could see a coworking space when you enter the town? It’s right there in front of you. Then, you don’t need the coffee shop. You don’t even need to google it. You know where you can work. Or have that meeting in a calm environment. It’s right in front of you. #community #coworking #remotework

You don’t need to have one big coworking space. Smaller spaces are great too. They’re closer to their members. Can be far away in the countryside. And… If members do want the infrastructure of a bigger space... Let them do that. Give them access to bigger spaces in bigger cities. That way, you get the best of both worlds. Small, cozy, close by, and quiet small spaces. Big, dynamic, full of events and community, big space. Why choose? Do both. Who is your coworking space really for? Is it for someone seeking "innovative global solutions and best practise?" Or Is it for a regular human being seeking connection, meaning, change, and somewhere to do their work? It reminds me of this story from Brené Brown's work, where she was asked to speak at a conference and told she had to wear 'business loafers' or something like that. Brené was about to go on stage, and she looked at her comfy clogs and her 'business loafers' and thought, "This is not who I am!" She went on stage in her comfy clogs and delivered her keynote on being a human being. We often do this "business class" thing to each other. We hide behind bullshit words and language. When it is all about connection, meaning and change. In the 1999 book "Clue Train Manifesto" authors Rick Levine, Christopher Locke, and Doc Searls discuss the human connection and how "all markets are conversations." They don't talk about weirdo words and "businessy class" language that we love to put on our websites. We create our world through language, and we also connect. Trying to solve the 'belonging crisis' by building a community with accidentally de-personalised corporate language won't work. There are better ways than using these odd words that are more at home in the movie, 'Office Space' or an episode of 'Silicon Valley' than in our local coworking communities. 📩 Got a minute? Today, a client asked if they would have to interview everyone who wanted to join their coworking new space when it opened. Did they have to let everyone in?? The answer is people 'self-select' this is mainly how you decide who joins. (In fourteen years of non-stop coworking and thousands of members across different types of spaces, our team has only had to kick three people out or refuse them.) ▶️ We create our world through language. And much of this starts with the messaging you put out and the language you use. As I recorded this video, part of my mind was also focused on how events in the UK unfolded this week. The misinformation and wording used by some people in their online media content shaped an unfortunate chain of events. Words are powerful - so pick the right ones! ▶️ So why is the language we use on our website so important? It's important because it shapes our being and our culture. When you have a coworking space, a community, or any membership group, one of the first places people will interact with your space is by reading your website or something you put online. So, this needs to play two roles: shaping the atmosphere, environment, culture, tone, and connectedness of what you're trying to achieve. Educating people because people spend so much time researching online. By the time they get to your building, group, program, or whatever it is, they will have read a lot; this is who they will think you are. What you write online will set the tone for how they experience the environment you're attempting to create. 🔔 Boost your coworking & community-building skills with my 2-minute daily email: follow the link in my bio. There have been some changes to the weekly coworking sessions. We'll now use Google Meet for the sessions, and Friday's hours have changed. I've also created a newsletter that is just for coworking. No fluff, no bullshit - just a basic email sent once per week with a reminder for the upcoming sessions. It will also be used if I ever need to make changes to the time of a session, as well as if I need to cancel a session. You can sign up here: https://vist.ly/3328m. Finally, if you visit my site, you'll see it's down for maintenance. It should be back up and prettier than ever very soon. In the meantime, you'll see that the coworking session details are included there, too. Much love. ❤️ Image description: A lovely little cat is eagerly helping its owner on their laptop. The area is well-lit and filled with plants. #CoworkWithBela #CommunitySupport #BodyDoubling #CoworkingCommunity #Coworking #CoworkingSpace #Cowork #RemoteWork #SafeSpace #Community
