How did we help shape the most iconic gate in Malta? 👇 Valletta’s landmark City Gate has been the main entrance to Malta’s capital since the 16th century. Originally completed in 1569, it has seen multiple reconstructions, with the latest redesign by renowned architect Renzo Piano in 2014. ✨ Architectural Highlights: Historical Significance: The gate has been a central part of Valletta since its founding by the Knights of St. John. Modern Redesign: Renzo Piano’s vision included a new Parliament Building and an open-air theatre, integrating the ruins of the WWII-bombed Royal Opera House. 💶 European Investment Bank's Role: Funding: The EIB provided €25 million, making up 31.25% of the total €80 million project cost. Impact: This funding was crucial for the successful completion of the project, enhancing Valletta’s cultural and architectural heritage. 🏛️ Cultural & Economic Benefits: Boosted tourism and local economy. New public spaces fostering social interaction and cultural events. The modern redesign helped preserve the historical essence of the city while introducing contemporary elements that attract both locals and tourists. Helped solidify Valletta's reputation as a UNESCO World Heritage site, as a good example of how to best blend historical and modern architecture. #Valletta #Architecture #RenzoPiano #EuropeanInvestmentBank #UrbanDevelopment #CulturalHeritage #Malta Picture credits Matthew Axiak | Creative Commons

Portugal’s rich cultural heritage is a powerful driver of its economy, significantly shaping various industries while enhancing its global appeal. 🇵🇹✨ The country’s unique architectural styles, ranging from the intricate Manueline to contemporary modernism, attract architecture enthusiasts, students, and tourists from around the world. In 2019, Portugal welcomed over 27 million international visitors, many drawn by its stunning historical sites and vibrant cities like Lisbon and Porto. Iconic structures such as the Jerónimos Monastery and the Torre de Belém not only reflect Portugal's artistic prowess but also play a crucial role in promoting educational tourism. As students and scholars travel to study these architectural masterpieces, they contribute to local economies through spending on accommodation, dining, and cultural experiences. In 2023, the government announced a €150 million investment plan aimed at restoring and conserving historic buildings across the country. This blend of education and tourism fosters cultural exchanges that enrich both visitors and locals. Programs that integrate local craftsmanship, design, and architectural history help preserve traditions while inspiring innovative ideas in the creative sector. #portugal #economy #culture #portugalplaces #architecture #preservation #creativeeconomy
