Eye injuries among children during Diwali, a festival celebrated in India with fireworks, have been a significant public health concern. Firecracker-related injuries can cause serious eye damage, leading to temporary or permanent vision loss, and children are particularly vulnerable due to their proximity to firecrackers and lack of protective measures. Here is an overview based on studies and reports over the past few years: 1. Burn injuries: firecrackers sparklers and "anar"affect the skin around the eyes and eyelids. 2. Corneal abrasions and lacerations: Frequently reported from exposure to high-energy fireworks. 3. Foreign Bodies in the Eye: Small fragments from exploding crackers can enter the eye. 4. Chemical Burns: Certain firecrackers contain chemicals that can cause chemical burns if they come in contact with the eye. 5. Vision Loss: In severe cases, retinal damage, traumatic cataracts, or optic nerve damage can lead to partial or total loss of vision. •Studies suggest that eye injuries increase by about 10–20% during the festival compared to other times of the year. •Children, especially those under 15, make up a significant proportion of Diwali-related eye injuries, with many injuries affecting children between 6 and 12 years old. •According to some reports, about 15-30% of cases require surgical intervention, and a small percentage may lead to permanent impairment of vision. •Preventive Measures and Public Awareness: Use of protective eyewear and maintaining a safe distance from lit fireworks are strongly recommended. Several hospitals in metropolitan areas such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai have documented hundreds of cases annually, with significant admissions in eye trauma centers during Diwali. Overall, while public awareness has helped reduce the total number of injuries over the years, Diwali continues to be a high-risk period for eye injuries, especially among children.
