How does India deliver “Care” to rural communities through Digital Health? The mission of an ideal Digital Health Solution should be to deliver hospital-grade care, anytime and anywhere across India & the globe. The Solution should enable multiple health screens & deliver high-quality care regardless of whether the rural community has a local Doctor or a trained Nurse or whether they have power or WiFi, etc. While challenges like power & WiFi can be addressed through technology, how does one deliver health screens & diagnostics without the presence of a local Doctor or Nurse? Enter the ASHA Worker. THE most critical “Non-Technology” component of our Digital Health Solution. It is the Asha worker who ensures that all tasks related to creating a patient profile, capturing patient symptoms, and measuring patient vitals, are completed efficiently despite the unavailability of qualified medical professionals. The Asha workers also visit patient’s homes to provide door-to-door care – especially for older patients with mobility issues and for expectant mothers who may not be able to visit a clinic. And finally, there’s an emotional element to delivering good quality “patient care” that cannot be fulfilled by ANY technology, and which is warmly delivered by the Asha worker. The Asha workers also need to be provided with a digital health solution that has advanced telemedicine capabilities but is extremely easy to use. That was the design mantra for the RHEMOS Health Station. India’s smallest & easy-to-use rural care solution. It enables Asha workers to administer 60+ critical vitals, blood/urine & pre-natal tests in village PHCs. The Health Station can also be carried to a patient’s home to deliver high-quality care ensuring huge patient convenience. Once it measures vitals, it transmits test results to App & Cloud to enable remote Doctor interventions & treatment. RHEMOS also works offline if cellular networks are unavailable & enables local health screens and collects test results, which are all transmitted to cloud once the cellular network is restored. It is also designed to work on Battery & Bluetooth to ensure no dependence on power or WiFi. And finally, with the capability to measure 60+ vitals & bio-markers, it can be used by Asha workers to deliver comprehensive primary care, chronic care, prenatal care, NCD & Anaemia detection health camps, etc. In conclusion, it is the Asha workers that define the success of digital health & enable us to connect rural patients with remote doctors for treatment. They reduce our reliance on medical staff and drastically cut care delivery costs. They accelerate rural care implementations, and ensure easy access to affordable and high-quality care in remote and underserved rural communities, which also makes this a massively scalable initiative. Over the past few years and post-pandemic, the Healthcare industry has been increasingly embracing new care delivery models that emphasize the delivery of high-quality care in a patient’s own home. This is also in response to patients' efforts to lower healthcare costs while demanding a better quality of care. To enable the delivery of these new models, providers are increasingly adopting technologies like Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). RPM uses digital devices to monitor patient health at home - or anywhere outside of a traditional clinical setting. It instantly transmits test results to Cloud for remote monitoring & to enable quick interventions by Doctors. RPM enables patients to be discharged from hospital sooner as they can be provided with a continuum of care in the comfort of their homes while being constantly under expert medical supervision. RPM solutions collect significant amounts of health data in real time and enable providers to detect and address health issues as soon as they are detected. AI and Machine Learning algorithms can analyze this data to provide Doctors with valuable insights which could also include early warnings for upcoming health issues for predictive & preventive care. RPM works closely with caregiver teams and arms them with this real-time, accurate data on patient health, enabling them to prioritize patients based on their needs. Patient-facing Apps allow patients to report symptoms, receive medication reminders, and conduct a video consultation with their doctor on-demand. In short, RPM enables the delivery of personalized & data-driven care at home - which also ensures positive outcomes and reduces hospital readmissions. In a country like India, RPM is also being leveraged to deliver high-quality care to rural & underserved communities. It enables comprehensive health screens to be delivered locally in village PHCs and at patients' doorstep while leveraging city-based Doctors and Specialists to deliver last-mile care. The health screens cover Primary care, Chronic care & Prenatal care. RPM is already moving to the forefront of the care industry, and given current and projected future trends, it has significant upside potential for the coming years. RHEMOS Health pioneered RPM in India. Today, we use a combination of revolutionary new sensors, non-intrusive technologies, discrete monitoring devices & wearables for continuous tracking of Heart rate, Respiratory rate, Sleep quality, ECG, BP, SpO2, Temp, and other health & mobility parameters. We can conduct 30 Blood Tests at home along with Urine tests, Auscultations, Lung function & FHR/UA monitoring using RPM to deliver the highest quality of care remotely. Ambulatory Virtual Care: A Lifeline for Rural India's Healthcare Needs Bridging the gap in healthcare access for remote areas of India is crucial. Ambulatory virtual care (AVC) emerges as a powerful solution, leveraging technology to deliver essential medical services directly to patients in their communities. Benefits for Rural Populations: Improved Access to Care: AVC eliminates geographical barriers, connecting patients with doctors remotely for consultations, chronic disease management, and preventive care. This is particularly significant for rural areas with limited healthcare facilities and specialists. Reduced Costs: AVC consultations are often more affordable than traditional in-person visits, eliminating travel expenses and potentially reducing wait times. Enhanced Convenience: Patients can schedule appointments at their convenience, avoiding long commutes and crowded waiting rooms. Continuity of Care: AVC platforms can facilitate communication and follow-up with doctors, promoting better patient engagement and disease management. Holistic Approach: AVC should integrate with existing primary care services, including immunization, maternal health, and nutrition programs. Community Health Centers can serve as AVC hubs. Benefits for the Healthcare System: Extended Reach of Care Providers: Doctors can extend their services to a wider population, optimizing their expertise and improving efficiency. Reduced Burden on Primary Care Facilities: AVC can manage routine consultations and chronic conditions remotely, freeing up resources at primary care facilities for more complex cases. Improved Data Collection and Analysis: Telemedicine platforms can facilitate data collection from rural areas, enabling better disease surveillance and resource allocation. Challenges and Considerations: Infrastructure Development: Building a robust telemedicine infrastructure with reliable internet connectivity across rural India is essential. Power and Device Limitations: Unstable electricity supply and lack of access to devices suitable for AVC consultations in some areas need to be addressed. Envisioning a Future with AVC: Government Initiatives: Government investment in expanding internet connectivity, subsidizing devices, and promoting digital literacy programs can accelerate AVC adoption. Public-Private Partnerships: Collaboration between the government, healthcare providers, and technology companies can create sustainable and accessible AVC solutions. Community Outreach Programs: Training local healthcare workers to assist patients with technology and educate communities about the benefits of AVC can bridge the digital divide. The Bottom Line: Ambulatory virtual care has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery in rural India. AVC can create a more accessible, efficient, and equitable healthcare system for all. This can lead to better health outcomes, improved quality of life, and a healthier rural population in India.
