A lot of people buy a franchise and they end up buying a job. At Rolling Suds, we’re looking for franchisees who wants to buy assets, not jobs. Initially when you start a business, you learn EVERYTHING. How the P&L works, how to hire, train, fire and then you start to “fire yourself” from roles. When I launched Rolling Suds, it was only me and the founders. Now I have 17 employees supporting franchisees. I want franchisees to be able to scale like that, so we’ve built systems to help them. They’ll get there quicker than if they did it on their own, and that’s the beauty of a franchise. Follow along if you like scaling businesses and want to watch me built the biggest power washing company in the world.

Franchising: The Path To Job Security Years ago, I heard that a typical franchise business buyer was simply looking for job security—a way to buy themselves a job. My initial reaction was that this seemed limiting. Spending hard-earned savings to buy a job felt like trading one form of employment for another, still bound by the daily grind and still potentially doing something unfulfilling. Fast forward over 20 years in the franchising industry, and I now know this image doesn't hold true for most successful franchise owners and investors. The world of franchising isn't just about quick-service restaurants or high employee turnover food and beverage businesses. Today, there are franchise opportunities in hundreds of different business categories with thousands of options. By the way, job security is not a bad thing in the face of big business layoffs happening more and more every year. Today's franchise business landscape is so vast that your options do appear limitless. If you can't find your ideal franchise business that fits your entrepreneurial nature, wants, and needs, (and job security) it probably means you haven't used a franchise consultant! One of the things you need to know before buying a franchise is IT’S NOT A JOB. It's not a job at all. But sometimes you might hear - and I cringe when I hear this - that you're buying a job when you buy a franchise. NOT TRUE! You’re investing in a saleable asset with a franchise. You can’t sell your job. Unlike a W2 role, where you can be laid off or affected by corporate changes, a franchise allows you to grow a business and build equity that you can eventually sell. You’re not trading time for dollars; you're investing in something that belongs to you. Curious about franchise ownership? Join my upcoming Q&A session and get all your questions answered. Evaluating a Franchise brand is not just about the concept. Yes, the concept should be strong and in demand with great support. But if the assistance is there and the brand is strong, how do you pick the right franchise? Just because you like the product does not mean you will be a successful franchisee. Look at your experience. What are the things you have mastered in your career that allow you to execute the playbook better than the others? A strong franchise system should simplify the plays and allow you to focus on mastering a few things to drive revenue and profitability. Your experience should allow you to excel at these drivers. Ask the questions to your franchise sales person. What professional backgrounds typically do best in your system and why? What are the levers I can pull on as a franchisee to drive the business? You can hire for the positions, but you still have to play the role of the franchisee; measuring results, driving accountability and developing the team. Build it and they will come is a fallacy. Anyone who is selling you on the strength of the concept alone or performance of other franchisees is doing you a disservice.

Some days I wonder why I’m building a franchise instead of buying into one! The real winners in franchising are the multi-unit or multi-brand owners who know how to scale fast. They cracked the code to financial success without having to do all the grunt work! If you’re goal is mostly centered around personal wealth. Don’t build the model, buy it! On the other hand, if you like pain, thrive in chaos, and feel you need to prove something to the world! Then maybe you want to be the Founder?! I’ve been doing some networking the past couple years and I’ve seen a clear distinction between franchiors and franchisees I’ve met! Wanna know a secret?! Successful franchisees are happier than successful Founders😶. You have to ask yourself what kind of success you’re after. If you’re not a builder, it’s so much easier to just buy franchises. For me, building a franchise isn’t always an easy choice, but I’m in it for for sooo much more then money, I have something to prove to myself! So let’s go!! Picture from our first office about four years ago. There’s over 40 of us on the team today😎

My thoughts while running on the treadmil this morning: In the franchise business, one truth stands out: to achieve substantial success, you often need to become a multi-unit franchisee. However, growth and expansion don’t happen in isolation—they require a team of exceptional general managers to lead your locations. As I connect with successful multi-unit franchisees, one common challenge we all face is finding those standout operators who can manage our locations effectively. These GMs are rare gems, but when you find them, they’re worth their weight in gold. They’re the ones who ensure customers are happy, operations run smoothly, and the bottom line keeps growing. For any general managers reading this—if you want to secure your place and thrive in this industry, make yourself invaluable. Take care of the customers, drive profitability, and make the owner’s life easier. If you’re doing these things and working for a SMART franchisee, they will do everything to keep you. After all, when you’re making money for the business and delivering great results, you become indispensable. Remember, in the world of franchising, success is a two-way street. If you bring value, the right owner will recognize it and make sure you’re rewarded. Keep that in mind as you build your career!

Most franchise businesses fail because they focus only on the product/service. Is that enough? If yes, they would all be successful. We have figured it takes more than just the product/service. Successful franchises have been doing this one thing right that could make any franchise successful - having systems built for scale. Delightree helps brands do exactly that - grow franchise businesses by having good systems: 1. Launch New Locations Faster: Simplify the process of expanding the franchise empire, ensuring smooth launches every time. 2. Empower Teams: Streamline onboarding and training processes, setting teams up for success from the beginning. 3. Achieve Operational Excellence: Streamline operations with task scheduling, automation, and insights, maximizing efficiency across all locations. 4. Foster Team Collaboration: Improve communication and engagement, fostering a culture of collaboration and teamwork. Want to know how we do this exactly? Send us a 'hello' in the inbox.
