The Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system 💦 The Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system is a water treatment process used to remove suspended solids, oils, and grease from water. It works based on the principle of air saturation in water to create tiny air bubbles that attach to the contaminants, causing them to float to the water's surface for removal. The working principle of a DAF system involves the following steps: 1. Coagulation and flocculation: Chemicals are added to the water to promote the aggregation of the suspended particles, creating larger and denser particles called flocs. 2. Air saturation: Air is dissolved into the water under pressure to form tiny bubbles, which adhere to the flocs when released from the pressurized environment. 3. Flotation and separation: The air bubbles carrying the flocs rise to the water's surface, creating a floating layer of contaminants known as "float." This float layer can then be mechanically skimmed off the surface for further treatment or disposal. 4. Clean water discharge: The treated water, with reduced suspended solids and contaminants, is discharged from the DAF system. Overall, the DAF system is an effective and efficient process for removing contaminants and improving water quality in various industrial and municipal applications. It is a pretreatment stage and physio-chemical treatment process.

🔍 Controlling Contamination in Hydraulic Plants: The Importance of Air Venting 💧 One of the most important contaminant intake point in #hydraulic plants, is the filling plug. Very often this plug is open or not correctly fitted and at the best and where present, it’s installed a plug with inner #filter. The inner filter is usually a 40um nominal sintetic filter media. Pondering that #particles to be trapped by filter cartridges present on system board, are surely smaller than 40um, it’s not rare that hydraulic filters blocking could be due to particles entering from this filter breathing plug, instead from the inner at the system normal production. In some cases, it’s possible to find what visible in picture, that is a 3um absolute ratio breathing filter (A) and a 40um nominal filtered filler plug (B) working together on the same reservoir. Since a 3um absolute media makes more resistance to the #air flow that a 40um nominal filter media, most of the suspended dust present in air, will flow inside the reservoir from the plug, #polluting the contained #oil. The correct operation is to install a 3um absolute rating breathing filter media, but applying a sealed filling plug.

Where water is re-circulated for economical and environmental reasons, grease, oil, fat, floating and suspended solids, settling material, and dissolved components need to be separated to provide good and uniform water quality. Also recovery of valuable product from the water may be another additional objective. In addition, clogging and excessive wear of pipelines and other associated equipment is prevented, which increases the operating reliability of the production plant. Where used process water is discharged as wastewater, pre-treatment is often required to prevent toxic or otherwise harmful substances from entering the sewer system and reduce thus surcharges and fees.
