U. S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) is planning a set of exercises aimed at filling key gaps in its ability to detect and track drone threats in the Middle East. Amid a sharp increase in one-way drone attacks on U.S. and allied forces by Iraq, Syria and Houthi rebels, CENTCOM is working with the Pentagon’s chief digital and AI office to identify sensors that can detect adversary systems and be integrated into a command and control framework. Earlier this month, the command’s innovation team solicited proposals from industry for the effort, dubbed Desert Guardian. An innovation officer at CENTCOM, said the innovation team will choose sensors this summer to participate in a U.S.-based exercise in October focused on spotting UAS threats. Early next year, it will stage a second exercise — this one at a base in the Middle East — focused on integrating those sensors into a single interface used by operators in the field. The command’s innovation office regularly runs technology sprints to identify operator challenges and try to find solutions. Avionics testing at the edge of control As the boundaries of what is possible are pushed in the aerospace sector, engineers are faced with an intractable problem – how to stay in control. Flight control systems are fundamental to all types of air and space vehicles, so the testing of controls is one of the most important aspects of flight testing. A spacecraft at the Moon or an aircraft traveling at hypersonic speeds of Mach 5+ is of limited use if it cannot be controlled. Last week, we shared about our partner, Lilium, and their rapid advancements in advanced air mobility (AAM). In recent news, start-up ERC System announced they will develop an #eVTOL designed for emergency medical flights called Charlie, estimated to be three times faster than ambulances and more cost-effective than helicopters. More established agencies such as NASA have their researchers using a virtual reality flight simulator to explore passenger experience in eVTOL aircraft. Japan has revealed video footage of the maiden test launch of a hypersonic missile currently under development. Japan's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) published the video on its official YouTube page. In an accompanying explanation, it said it had "conducted a pre-launch test of a Hyper-Velocity Gliding Projectile for island defense" in California on March 23. 【Experience weightlessness on board the 'Zero-G' Airbus】 The only way to get away from the sensation and effects of gravity is to give in to it. That is why the 'Zero-G' Airbus A300 that ESA uses for parabolic flights has to 'freefall' through the air - with no force other than gravity acting on it - to generate 20 seconds of weightlessness at a time. The Airbus A300 Zero-G flight offers a unique experience of weightlessness similar to space conditions. This aircraft, specifically modified for parabolic flights, briefly simulates zero gravity by flying in a parabolic trajectory. During each parabola, passengers experience weightlessness for approximately 20-30 seconds, allowing for various scientific experiments and astronaut training, as well as offering civilians a taste of space travel. On this day (August 21) in 1965, Gemini 5, also known as Gemini V, was a significant mission in NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Project Gemini. It was the third crewed Gemini flight and aimed to test the endurance of astronauts in space for long durations. The mission was crewed by Command Pilot L. Gordon Cooper Jr. and Pilot Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr The primary goals were to demonstrate a long-duration crewed flight, evaluate the effects of extended weightlessness on the crew, and test rendezvous capabilities using a rendezvous evaluation pod. The mission lasted for 7 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes, and 14 seconds. Gemini 5 set a new world record for the longest crewed spaceflight at the time, breaking the previous record held by the Soviet Union’s Vostok 5. The mission also tested new fuel cells that generated enough electricity to power longer missions, a pivotal innovation for future Apollo flights.
