Bouncing forward better – micro-foundations of combinatorial innovation! 🚀 Check out this new article that explores the micro-foundations of combinatorial innovation. Transformative activities with high complexity and novelty are made possible through combinatorial innovation, which is why it's important to understand the conditions that empower entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs to pursue it. https://lnkd.in/d4f47kgA The article highlights that agents' time perspective and combinatorial capabilities are crucial for combinatorial innovation. Institutional incentive structures and knowledge bases condition time perspective, whereas network structures and firm routines condition combinatorial capabilities. Practical examples are provided to illustrate these arguments and show their relevance for policy and innovative actors. I am so happy to see this important report come to light. Thank you Citizens Research Council of Michigan, especially Bob Schneider and Eric Lupher, for your important work in this space. Here are some thoughts and takeaways: 1. If Michigan wants to attract and retain our best and brightest, we need to grow #jobs they care about. #Michigan is home to leading edge #research and #startup activity that promises the jobs and economic transformation that can take us into the future. We underinvest in these areas today and, in fact, have systematically cut back investment for years while other states have doubled down. We can't win the future game this way. 2. Places like Boston's life sciences corridor would not exist were it not for focused, decades' long investment. The City of Austin attracted the U.S. Army Futures Command Center because they organized and worked a strategy. To this day, the Texas Foundation for Innovative Communities helps drive data-backed strategy and collaboration that have transformed that community. Michigan needs long-term thinking, vision, and strategy--alongside meaningful public and private investment--if we want our future technology clusters and jobs to flourish. 3. We have been underinvesting, but there are plenty of places within the state budget or through other mechanisms that could help us move in a new direction. We have the way, we just need the will, which seems to be growing. This report underscores that the ROI for such support is $5:$1. We can do it, and we should. Turns out public policy and innovation can go hand in hand. In fact, some good public policy, combined with economic inclusion, could be Michigan's Innovation X-factor! Yesterday, I had the privilege of going to the FHSS Research Institute in Innovation and Entrepreneurship launch!   In case you missed it, here is a list of all the projects discussed:   🚀 Launch of the Experts in Residence Program: - This gives students the opportunity to consult entrepreneurs for business advice and support   📊 Launch of the SME in the Swansea Bay City Region Survey: - This is the project that I have been working on with David Pickernell for the past couple of months - Information gathered from this survey will give the Institute insight on to address overall business resilience concerns. Specifically looking to address target supply chain resilience, organizational agility, and business continuity measures in the Swansea Bay City Region - Keep an eye out for this because it is being launched on May 14!   🌍 Launch of the 1st International Research Symposium on the Global South: - This project focuses on challenges and opportunities faced by entrepreneurs in the Global South. It looks to address specific jurisdictional nuances to aid in sustainable development - It is managed by Dr. Samuel Ebie, in partnership with Olabisi Onabanjo University. - This will be held on July 1st, 2024   💡 Launch of the RESIR Project: Re-imagining Entrepreneurial Skills: Co-creating Innovation for Resilience - This project is focused on trying to aid steel workers from Tata Steel after 3,000 job losses were announced - It consists of 2 workshops with Tata steel workers to identify community needs and to encourage entrepreneurship - It is managed by Dr Daniele Doneddu, in partnership with Wales Innovation Network   It was incredible to see how the Small Business Charter has been able to help grow the Research Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside and learn from such talented individuals.
