Using Advances in APD Technology to Boost IR System Performance By Benjamin White - CEO, Phlux Technology In infra-red (IR) time-of-flight (ToF) detection and measurement applications, such as LiDAR, laser range finders and optical test equipment, the transmitter employed will be a high-power laser diode for sending out light pulses. Complementing this will be the signal detector, situated at the front end of the receiver. That will either be an IR sensor, or an array of sensors. In such applications, and likewise with regard to IR communications systems, a more sensitive detector will mean that the system’s operating range is extended, or conversely the power of the laser diode transmitter can be reduced for a given operating range. This article looks at what can be done to augment the receiver element’s sensitivity levels. To detect small signals in the IR spectrum, use of an avalanche photodiode (APD) is widely recommended. This component has a layer of semiconducting material that converts light into an electrical current. The layer absorbs the energy from incident photons, creating an electron-hole pair from the material that can be separated and guided to opposite electrodes with an electric field. By increasing the reverse bias voltage on these devices, they exhibit gain - multiplying the current produced. It’s an avalanche effect in which carriers (electrons and holes) are excited by absorbed photons and accelerated in the internal electric field, so that they generate secondary carriers.
