#ArtnetNews: As the final evening sale in a full week of bellwether auctions, Christie’s evening sale of 21st century art was a clear reflection of the current slimmed-down and cautious global art market. The auction house held a robust Modern sale earlier in the week but this auction had fewer offerings than in previous years and many lots were guaranteed either by the house itself or outside parties. Bids were slow to come in for many lots, often arriving at the final moment before the hammer fell. And in keeping with a theme that has continued throughout New York’s marquee sales this week, many works sold at the low end of their price range. Below-estimate bids were common and often accepted by the evening’s auctioneer, Georgina Hilton, suggesting that auction experts successfully convinced consignors to lower reserves—and expectations—ahead of the sale. While I am glad that women artists are getting their well-overdue attention and appreciation in many artistic movements and periods that are well-studied, I am saddened by the price tags attached to their work, and for all artists in this predicament. Placing a price on art keeps it in the hands of the elite. Art is for everyone. I encourage folks to watch The Price of Everything, a documentary that examines consumer culture and contemporary art. While the film has some bias, it provides excellent examples from living and working artists on the issue of pricing art—and particularly doing so at astronomical prices. For example, in the movie, Nigerian-American artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby sadly watches as her painting is resold for $900,000, as she will not receive profit from the sale. The greater issue at hand, however, is how this will further affect sales and pricing of her art and how it creates worries from the artist about authentic expression and keeping up with market demand. We must decouple art from money. "Breaking auction record" is not something to celebrate.
This May, Leonora Carrington’s Surrealist masterpiece “Les Distractions de Dagobert” (1945) is anticipated to smash the artist’s auction record at Sotheby’s.

The results are in from Christie's Exquisite Eye: Chinese Paintings Online auction, held from November 28th to December 12th, 2024, in Hong Kong! 🎨✨ With a sell-through rate of 78.2%, 115 out of 147 lots found new homes, bringing in a total hammer price of HK$5.9 million. While the auction displayed the resilience of traditional Chinese art, some trends emerged. Collectors were cautious, especially in the mid-range market, preferring pieces that reflect quality over quantity. 🌟 Notable highlights included Xu Beihong's stunning Drinking Horse, which soared to HK$650,000. The piece not only resonated emotionally but also stood out as a benchmark for collectors of Chinese ink paintings. Additionally, pieces by Huang Yongyu and Lin Fengmian proved equally enchanting, showcasing the deep cultural narratives embedded in their work. As we navigate the complexities of the current art market, the results serve as a reminder of the enduring value of exceptional quality and storied provenance. In 2017, Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi sold at auction for $450 million. Meanwhile, a poster reprint would have set you back $10. Why are a small number of super-wealthy buyers willing to pay such huge sums for the right pieces? It’s a question that is becoming more widely relevant, as new art investment funds seek to open this murky and unregulated market up to the broader public. So how much does the value of your investment depend on the whims of a handful of galleries and collectors? And how can you even be sure what you’re buying is authentic? This double dragon statue originated from the Greek amphora. It is believed that it was introduced to China from the West during the Tang Dynasty and was decorated with dragon heads, becoming the double dragon statue in Chinese culture. Yongzheng Double Dragon Zun is an antique work, and its style is always different. The Tang Zun has a simple shape and a rounded abdomen; the Yongzheng Zun is tall and handsome, with a more beautiful curve of the abdomen, and the appliquéd bird's eye pattern on the shoulders is certainly more delicate. Auctioned at RMB 42 m on October 27th, 2024 , Shanghai
