Content Saturation I had an interesting discussion with some people over the weekend about whether #AI can soon recreate #television shows and #film and perhaps rectify what people perceive as bad endings (think Game of Thrones or The Last Jedi) or maybe even finish unfinished shows. A lot of optimists claimed we could do it in five years or perhaps even next year! I am of the opinion that it will take decades. After thinking about it, I think our disagreements came down to a couple of key points: 1. Regulatory: What good is spending the money making a show if you can't use or distribute it? We can expect increased government scrutiny over content generated by AI. While the Copyright Office and the courts have so far found that AI-generated content does not violate the copyright of material it uses for training, it has stated that such generated content is itself not copyrightable. This opens it up to copyright infringement that companies like Disney have nightmares about when their copyrights lapse. 2. Artist Pushback: Creatives across a vast swatch of the industry have overwhelmingly opposed the use of AI from The New York Times to #Hollywood guilds like SAG-AFTRA and WGA to people like Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. If AI-generated content comes to fruition it will not be through consent to use their works and talents. 3. Quality/Content Saturation: We are fast approaching a point of content saturation. Consumers care about the quality of their content. They want to watch faithful and artistic TV shows and adaptations. They want fun and exciting games. And a lot of good content is only possible with human intuition and intangibles. The slight shake in a voice actor's line as they give a heartfelt performance. How a story is intentionally weaved together. When music in games and TV is incorporated into the scenes by reference to certain leitmotifs. When I see something like Dropout's hit improv show, #gamechangers, and the level of creativity, and humor mixed with genuineness - I can't imagine a world where AI is capable of replacing that. Come up with some approximation of it? Sure. But we only have 24 hours in the day. Why watch an approximation when the real thing is there? My final disclaimer for myself is that I am not diminishing the potential for AI. I believe, for better or worse, it will be used by plenty of industries in an attempt to disrupt the field. However, I think the much more reasonable and realistic approach is creating tools and streamlining the processes to help the artists make their art rather than trying to replace them wholesale.
