⚒️🔧cavitation 🔧🔨 Cavitation occurs when the liquid in a pump turns to a vapor at low pressure. It occurs because there is not enough pressure at the suction end of the pump, or insufficient Net Positive Suction Head available (NPSHa). When cavitation takes place, air bubbles are created at low pressure. Cavitation causes pump performance deterioration, mechanical damage, noise and vibration which can ultimately lead to pump failure. Vibration is a common symptom of cavitation, and many times the first sign of an issue. Question to Experts: During a routine vibration survey, we detected harmonic vibrations in the 6th order in the inboard bearing of a 56 kW motor. The overall vibration levels were low, but physical noise was slightly elevated. The motor operates under two conditions: Condition-1: The motor runs for just ½ hour per week, as the plant is in preservation mode. Condition-2: The motor runs most of the day in regular operation. Pump vibration tips for coupled pumps. 1. Make sure the pump is properly aligned 2. Make sure you deal with the soft foot first 3. Make sure you shaft keys are either online or 180 degrees out 4. Make sure all your hardware is tight 5. In the case of a split coupler, make sure each half is facing the right direction. IF IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL WOBLE, IT WILL WOBLE.
