As articleship seekers, having a good resume opens up many opportunities for you. This is true that attempts matter. Marks matter. Ranks matter. References matter. But what also matters is how you’re presenting yourself and preparing for the best of opportunities out there! How can you stand out from the crowd? 👀🔍 Following are a few points which added value to my CV and helped me in getting a good articleship( except academics): 1️⃣Technical Skills💻: (And not merely certificates, but you should be able to justify) In my case, I took a certification course for financial modelling, and I built a portfolio of 2-3 companies- their future projections, peer analysis , DCF Valuation etc etc. 2️⃣Social Skills💃: I was a part of EICASA, an association of CA Students~ and was a part of many extra curriculars. I had contributed a few articles to the students journal. I took part in some seminars, competitions, workshops and conferences. Which helped me a lot in working on my communication skills. 3️⃣Past Internships/ Apprenticeship 👩💻: If you have any experience( whether paid or unpaid) which taught you something useful in life. In my case, I did a couple of internships which wasn’t directly related to articleship fields, but was enough to justify my knowledge about Excel. 4️⃣Achievements🏆~ Quizzes, Paper Presentations, Case Study Competitions. Pitch Deck etc. If you’d participated ( or won( even better)) in any such competitions, you can mention that. Avoid adding phrases like- Class Monitor in school, Rank 1 out of 40 students in class 8🤣 (They should be recent). The key is, whatever you mention in your CV, you must have some or the other portfolio to justify your learnings and experiences ✨ #caarticleship #castudent #articleship #cv #icai

Biggest blunder as a CA student. With enough friends and juniors pursuing this course, here's a mistake you would not want to make. I'm talking about ignoring societies/internships/upskilling in its entirety for your CA journey. Let's understand this in detail. When a student comes to college, cracks foundation in first year itself and starts preparing for intermediate. Once CA Inter is cleared, he/she would then think of upskilling when their batch is already way ahead. Instead my suggestion is to definitely attempt foundation early on (which is easily manageable), but make sure to participate in societies & internships till your 1st year ends. This gives you exposure and helps you get clarity if you're 100% in for CA. Once confirmed, you can go all in for CA Intermediate while still holding a basic POR till 2nd. You can then take up internships in the last few months of college & go for your articleship hunt. The main point is that your first year of college is a golden opportunity for personality development. If you're getting that in your regular college, don't let CA hold you back. Recently, I assigned a task to one of my CA interns—to analyze the tax implications of an agreement from a GST standpoint. She completed the assignment meticulously and presented a thorough report. When I praised her for her work and mentioned that I would be receiving the credit for it, she surprised me with her response: “Sir, you take the credit, but I gained what I aimed for—the learning and knowledge from executing this task.” This interaction made me reflect deeply. Despite knowing that I would be receiving credit for her work, she prioritized her own growth and learning. It’s a reminder that in any learning environment, whether as a mentor or a mentee, the focus should always be on the growth and knowledge gained rather than who gets the credit. This query invariably crosses the minds of nearly all CA students that “The level of remuneration (which we commonly known as a stipend) offered during CA articleship is generally lower than that provided for engineering internships.” While it's true that CA articleship stipends are generally lower than that of engineering internships, it's important to consider the broader picture. Factors Influencing Stipend Differences: 1. Nature of Work CA Articleship is primarily a learning experience. Articles focus on gaining practical knowledge and exposure to the field of accounting and finance. While they contribute to the firm's work, their primary role is to learn and develop their skills. On the other hand, Engineering Internships often involve specific projects with direct contributions to the company's goals, which can justify a higher stipend. 2. Skill Set: CA Articleship focuses on developing a broader range of skills, including auditing, taxation, and financial accounting, which may not be as immediately valuable to a company as specialized engineering skills. On the other hand, Engineering graduates often possess specialized technical skills that are directly applicable to industry needs. These skills can be valuable to companies, leading to higher internship stipends. 3. Industry Demand: The demand for engineers in various industries can be higher than the demand for Chartered Accountants. This higher demand can drive up internship stipends for engineers. Long-Term Perspective: While the initial financial compensation may be lower, CA articleship offers significant long-term benefits: 1. Professional Qualification: Becoming a Chartered Accountant opens doors to high-paying and prestigious careers. 2. Comprehensive Skill Set: The rigorous training equips individuals with a wide range of skills, making them valuable assets in the corporate world. 3. Network Building: Articleship provides opportunities to network with industry professionals, which can be invaluable for future career advancement. Some CA firms, especially larger ones, may offer higher stipends, particularly in metropolitan areas. Additionally, the value of a CA articleship extends beyond the monetary compensation, as it provides invaluable practical experience and a strong foundation for a successful career in finance and accounting. Ensure these boxes are ticked before making your decision: ✅ 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Make sure the role being offered excites you! If you’re unfamiliar with it, give it a try. You can always move to a different department later if you want to explore more options. ✅ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤-𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 Your internship should NOT interfere with your study routine. Avoid industries with exhausting hours that leave you no time for your CA preparation. ✅ 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 Choose an industry that is conveniently located. Long commutes can leave you drained, no matter how comfortable the working hours are. ✅ 𝐂𝐀 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭 Never compromise on your CA Final attempt. If an industry asks you to shift it, don’t agree. Be clear on your goals before making any decision. ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬 The exam study leaves should be a minimum of 4 months for sufficient revision. Students registered under the new scheme don't have to emphasize on this point. ⚠️ 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐩: Don’t let stipend be a deciding factor! It’s a temporary income, not a permanent career base. How educative was your internship experience? Allow me to share mine with you! I had an awesome six weeks experience with #MGI-O.A.K Chartered Accountants, of which I was fortunate enough to visit a client office with a team from the firm. I was tasked to work on the expenses aspect of the client company, it was tedious, but very enlightening. Imagine not yet taught Auditing, but you are privileged to be guided through it with hands on experience, it was very amazing. #Miriam and #EdmundSikaOsei, took time of their busy schedules in the office space to take me through, what they call the #AuditAssertions, this help was what made it possible for me to execute my tasks appropriately. This experience from the firm, did not only educate me on work ethics, but the acknowledgement of the #IFRS and #IAS standards. Understanding these are very crucial and has made me aware, I am supposed to take them more seriously than ever, since it's the bedrock of the #AccountingProfession. I am very glad to have been able to also partake in the weekly training sessions held by the firm on the #CasewareAuditingSoftware. This shows how the firm embraces technology amd would want to be more accurate in it's dealings with their clients. This has also taught to me inclined with Accounting related software and technology, since it will give me the edge I need in this profession. I never believed I could learn this much in this short time period. As an aspiring CA(SA)…. ….studying towards a Diploma and not a Bachelor’s in Accounting, I feel like we students who are ought to take bridging courses such as Advanced Diploma’s/BCTA before obtaining or getting enrolled for our CTA’s are not really spoken about/motivated or even considered. Firms prefer Bachelor students and give opportunities to them the most (job requirements at most firms include a Bachelor’s qualification) and to me as a Senior year student studying towards a Diploma Qualification, looking for Firms to do Vacation work/ internships or work integrated at, I have to struggle a lot before I get recognition from firms. Don’t get me wrong, I do know that a Bachelor degree is more advanced than a Diploma and maybe that’s why Firms opt for it more than a Diploma, however a Diploma is still a qualification and I wish Firms would consider giving us chances as well because we really are doing our level best. Our journeys may take a little longer than others but we all will get to our destinations at the end. Consider us too, we might actually surprise you.
