This insightful session provided me with a deeper understanding of sustainable practices and circular economy principles, which are crucial for our collective effort towards a more sustainable future. I am proud to have received a certificate for my involvement in this important discussion. ♻️ The circular economy is an innovative approach that focuses on rethinking and redesigning our current linear economic model. Instead of the traditional "take, make, dispose" mindset, the circular economy emphasizes the importance of keeping resources in use for as long as possible, extracting the maximum value from them while in use, and recovering and regenerating products and materials at the end of their service life. This model not only aims to reduce waste and environmental impact but also fosters economic growth and resource efficiency. Glad to have participated in the #CircularEconomyConference 2024 themed 'WE economy' which lies in circularity, climate and biodiversity awareness, the strength of people power, and a commitment to ethical business values. Pillars creating a reality where sustainability is not a distant goal but a tangible outcome of collective effort. A circular economy is an economic system that aims to eliminate waste and promote the continual use of resources, whereby products are designed for durability, reuse, and recycling, hence keeping materials in circulation and minimizing environmental impact. The Conference created a platform for knowledge sharing, best practices and identification of opportunities aimed at transitioning from a linear economy to a #circulareconomy in Kenya.. I particularly enjoyed 2 panel discussions on the role of AI in shaping a circularity workforce where I got to know that AI can track waste and also help in redesigning and refurbishing waste leading to circularity together with a discussion on community based solutions in a circular economy, whereby initiatives look at fostering a recycling culture by empowering communities to be wastepreneurs through giving incentives to streamline waste from source hence sustainability. Good news is that Kenya is on the verge of implementing its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations 2024, which are designed to hold producers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products, particularly in terms of waste management. This regulatory framework aims to enhance environmental sustainability by ensuring that producers take responsibility for the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of their products once they reach the end of their life cycle. This will ensure business adhere to a #circulareconomy. I am delighted to have been part of these discussions, gaining knowledge, sharing insights and networking. Unlike the traditional “take-make-dispose” model, the circular economy emphasizes reusing materials, regenerating natural systems, and designing products for longevity. Africa’s rapid urbanization and growing waste challenges make circularity essential. Cities like Kigali are leading the way with innovative waste management systems that reduce landfill reliance and promote recycling. In agriculture, regenerative practices such as agroforestry improve soil health while sequestering carbon. Public-private partnerships are critical in scaling circular economy solutions. Collaborative efforts can fund recycling facilities, promote sustainable product design, and establish innovation hubs where entrepreneurs develop circular solutions. Initiatives like Ghana’s Nelplast, which transforms plastic waste into durable paving blocks, highlight the economic potential of waste-to-wealth strategies. By transitioning to a circular economy, Africa can unlock significant economic value while addressing environmental challenges. Today, I had the privilege of attending an inspiring session led by Mr. Mohamed Abdul Badie, CEO of Innovativa Smart Solutions, as part of my Principles of Sustainability course. His journey into waste management began with curiosity, he noticed someone collecting waste from the trash and discovered that the waste was being sold. This sparked his interest and led him to study the intricacies of waste management, digging deeper into the untapped potential of what many consider "waste." Mr. Abdel-Badie shared his experience working in Nigeria, where burning trash is a widespread issue. He identified a deeper challenge: the lack of reliable electricity, which exacerbates waste-related problems. Through his work, he emphasized the need for innovative solutions tailored to local contexts, proving that sustainability is both a global and local challenge. During the session, he also presented insightful data on current global waste trends, highlighting the projected increases in waste generation due to urbanization and population growth. For instance: - Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to see waste generation grow from 516 million tonnes in 2030 to 714 million tonnes by 2050. - Similarly, East Asia and the Pacific region will experience an increase from 602 million tonnes to 714 million tonnes during the same period. These statistics underscored the urgency of developing solutions such as recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy systems to tackle this global issue effectively. It was also fascinating to learn that Mr. Abdel-Badie was a former coworker of our esteemed professor, Dr.Suzanna ElMassah. This personal connection added a unique depth to the session, as it highlighted the collaborative spirit behind environmental innovations. A key takeaway for me: sustainable solutions are not just about managing waste but understanding the underlying issues within communities and addressing them with innovative thinking. These rules aim to minimize waste and environmental impact by requiring packaging to be more sustainable, reusable, and recyclable, with a specific focus on reducing single-use plastics and over-packaging. The legislation also emphasizes promoting refillable containers, eco-design, and clearer recycling labels to help the EU meet its climate and sustainability goals. 💚 Ghent-based biotech startup AmphiStar has raised €6 million to develop eco-friendly biosurfactants derived from waste, offering a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional surfactants. This #funding will enable the company to scale its production and bring these innovative products to market. The European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF), which led the investment round, is proud of the collaboration and looks forward to supporting AmphiStar's mission to advance environmentally friendly solutions. With this new funding, AmphiStar aims to revolutionize the surfactant industry by reducing environmental impact and promoting the circular economy. 💪 Also, the EU has announced the launch of the new EU Circular Economy Resource Centre and the SWITCH Circular Economy in East Africa as part of its Global Gateway strategy to promote sustainable #development. The Resource Centre aims to support the circular economy by providing knowledge and resources for businesses and policymakers. The SWITCH program in East Africa will focus on promoting circular economy practices to drive sustainable economic growth in the region. 🌍 On Earth Day, volunteers in Lagos, Nigeria, organized a #cleanup campaign to address the city's waste problem. This initiative was part of broader environmental efforts to combat pollution and promote sustainability in the densely populated city. Did you know? 💡 The “National Green Growth Strategy of the Lao PDR 🇱🇦 till 2030” is currently being implemented in the country since 2018. The Strategy was developed to strengthen the balance between economic expansion, environmental protection and social development to ensure the maintenance of high, stable, sustained, and durable economic growth. The Strategy, among others, provide the basic legal frameworks for solid waste management.
