𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Pitfall #1. The reality of the world we're living in is that the external world is moving at a much faster pace than organisations can respond. Ensure you have the resources and capabilities to implement your plans effectively. 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. Pitfall #2. Businesses must think not only short term but also more future-oriented... What will my business or industry look like five years from now? Balance short-term objectives with long-term vision. 𝗧𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀. Pitfall #3. I talk a lot about strategy being about focus—the ability to distill and understand what we will focus on. Prioritise key areas where you can truly excel. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀. Pitfall #4. You've got to start with the external environment. But what does the external environment look like? Stay informed about industry changes and adapt your strategy accordingly. Developing a robust strategy is crucial, but falling into common traps is easy. By addressing these pitfalls, you can create strategies that are both visionary and executable, setting your organisation on a path to sustainable growth. Focus on what truly matters, and stay adaptable.
