Breed fulfilment: what is it? Breed fulfilment is allowing your dog an outlet do display their natural, genetic behaviours - behaviours they have been bred to do. For example; Arlo is a springer spaniel, he was bred for flushing game from hedges and hard to reach areas. To retrieve game from rivers and waterways, places humans wouldn’t necessarily want to wander into. So breed fulfilment for him is having accesses to areas where he can explore undergrowth, swim & retrieve “game”, it’s allowing him to spend hours sniffing, it’s giving him a “job” and a purpose to work his brain as well as his body. The majority of issues I see on a day to day basis could all be fixed or helped a great deal if the owners fulfilled their dogs according to their genetics. A licki Matt is great but is in no way a substitute for bite work for shepherds or Belgian Malanois, man trailing for hounds / beagles, gun dog training for spaniels or labradors, agility for collies and so on! Things like separation anxiety, destructive behaviour, reactivity etc. could all be prevented or helped with breed specific exercise / fulfilment.
