We’re thrilled to share that three outstanding members of our therapeutic preschool team represented Ability KC on the national stage at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Annual Conference last week in California! Preschool Program Director Jewell Cockrum, Program Analyst and Logistics Manager Kyle Boehr, and Lead Teacher Belinda Peister led two impactful sessions to an audience of over 8,200 attendees from all 50 states and three other countries. Their presentations—“Challenging Implicit Disability Bias: An Answer to Critical Staff Shortages in Early Education” and “Joyful Engaged Learning through Play for Children of Differing Abilities”—highlighted disability bias, inclusive practices, and therapeutic play adaptations for children with varying abilities, inspiring attendees to adopt more inclusive practices. At Ability KC, our therapeutic preschool program creates joyful, supportive, and inclusive early learning experiences that empower children to thrive. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to attend and share our mission on such a large platform and honored to see how our expertise can drive positive change in early education beyond our walls. 🌟 Ready to learn more about our unique program? Does it makes sense for preschool special education (IDEA Part B - 619) to be administrated under a consolidated early childhood governance structure? Two states now administer preschool special education in a early childhood agency and NOT under the State Education Agency (SEA) - these are the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department and Ohio Department of Children and Youth. Potential advantages are: - increased inclusion of young children with developmental delays and disabilities in regular early care and education (ECE) settings with the same age peers without disabilities; - wraparound full day services for working parents; - aligned professional development across ECE programs; - aligned quality standards and accountability; - Addressing the needs of children challenging behaviors and/or early childhood mental health needs and promoting social and emotional development. What other benefits or challenges do you see in having preschool special education administered in an early childhood department that is not the SEA? #preschoolspecialeducation #earlychildhoodeducation Photo from the ECECD website https://lnkd.in/gxcX-PRz

Creating a Caring Community in Early Childhood Education In early childhood education, caring goes beyond kindness—it's about nurturing prosocial skills like empathy, cooperation, and respect to build positive relationships and a thriving community. Fostering a supportive environment where everyone can thrive together is the foundation of a "caring community of learners." Why It Matters: 💡 A nurturing environment creates a sense of belonging, safety, and opportunity for growth, benefiting both children and educators. 🔦 Embracing this supportive space allows everyone to thrive and reach their fullest potential! 🌞 Children who feel safe and valued can see beyond their needs, building lasting emotional, social, and cognitive strengths. Equity & Inclusion 🌟 Inclusive communities celebrate each child's cultural, ethnic, and language identities. 🌟 By incorporating diverse books, images, and activities, educators help every child feel valued and supported, including those with disabilities. Creating a Caring Community 🌠 Design welcoming environments by setting up spaces where every child feels seen and appreciated. 🌠 Respond to individual needs by tailoring interactions to support each child's needs. 🌠 Host awareness activities by encouraging group activities that promote empathy and belonging. Fostering community is essential in helping children recognize the impact of their actions on others. Creating caring and inclusive spaces empowers our students to develop empathy and resilience. As educators and leaders, let’s commit to prioritizing these values in our classrooms and programs. This commitment will guide our children toward a future where they understand the importance of connection and carry it throughout their lives, making a lasting impact. We can nurture a generation that cares for and supports one another. #EarlyChildhood Educators #EarlyChildhoodEducation #CaringCommunity #ProsocialSkills #ECE #Inclusivity #ChildDevelopment #EducationalLeadership #TrainMadeSimple

As we say at St. David’s Center, “All behavior is communication.” Unfortunately, not all preschools and daycares have the tools to interpret and understand children’s communication, especially when that involves “big behaviors” like screaming and biting. The result? Alarmingly high rates of preschool expulsion, with children facing rejection and disruption at critical developmental stages. Through our Early Childhood Education (ECE) Consultation Program, we’re partnering with preschools to transform classrooms into inclusive, supportive environments. By building on each program’s strengths, we help educators interpret behaviors, manage challenges, and create systems that meet the needs of all children—including those with developmental differences and ACEs. Read our latest blog to hear one child’s story of “soft expulsion,” and to understand the kinds of changes needed to end the crisis in preschool expulsion. And for teachers and administrators, if you’re ready to enhance your program’s capacity, let’s connect and bring your vision to life. #InclusiveEducation #ECEConsultation #EveryChildThrives #EarlyLearning #TeachersSupportingTeachers
