Sometimes, I wonder why applicants apply for jobs for which they lack the required competence or that are located far from their current residence. For example, how can a graduate intern apply for the role of a procurement manager? Or how can someone living in Calabar apply for a job based in Lagos without having any relatives or a place to stay there? In these cases, I often reach out to confirm their current location, just to ensure their address aligns with where they are actually living. Sometimes, it matches, but other times it doesn't. When I ask them about it, some respond by saying they didn’t realize the job was in Lagos, despite the job advert clearly stating so. Others admit they were simply "taking a chance." But to what end? This behavior suggests a lack of focus or direction, which is concerning for individuals who claim to be meticulous. Dear applicants, please refrain from applying for jobs outside your area of expertise or geographical location unless you are genuinely considering relocation. Understanding your strengths and applying for jobs that align with them is crucial. It shows that you have a clear career path. Thank you for submitting the right applications henceforth. Enjoy your weekend!
I agree with the lack of competence part. But for the location part, in 2024, that shouldn't be considered a barrier, nor an issue. Cos as you rightly stated, many people are already willing to relocate. After all, they are not earning anything wherever they currently are. I mean, People in Nigeria apply for Jobs in Saudi Arabia -and get the jobs. What is Lagos to Calabar😁
Let me not say my story 😔
I see your point Abiola Tejumola ACIPM 👏🎉, but I think it's crucial to consider the underlying issue here. Many job seekers are applying out of desperation, not a lack of focus or direction. The job market is highly competitive, and sometimes, 'taking a chance' is all they've got. Employers often demand an unrealistic combination of skills and experience, leaving applicants with no choice but to aim high and hope for the best. Instead of questioning their motivations, perhaps we should be questioning the system that puts them in this position. Are employers doing enough to provide realistic opportunities for growth and development?🤔 And is the recruitment process truly transparent enough to guide applicants towards suitable roles?😕🤷 I would love to hear your thoughts from this perspective too
Abiola Tejumola ACIPM while I acknowledge your point about expertise but I humbly disagree with location. If the applicant is fully qualified for the role but is not within the geographical location of the job would you rather let him go and employ someone who is not qualified just because he/she is close ? I think the issue of relocation should be decided by the applicant when the firm is not ready to support with relocation. Finally I think most standardized organisations offer relocation assistance no matter how small.
You are correct in your observations, however too many posting create a perfect wish list, usually all this experience, propriety software and nuance understanding of a specific product...if your skills are in the "ballpark"... go for it!
Good insight!
Valid point!

4moThe point is not valid, because some companies offer accommodations that the hiring whatever knows nothing about 😁
