Something quite remarkable happened at CD PROJEKT RED last week. The award-winning game developer released Witcher 3 REDkit. I know the last two sentences mean nothing to you, yet. but read on. Here's a quick background, - Witcher 3 was launched in 2015 (that is 9 years ago!) - It is hailed as one of the most engaging games (across formats) EVER! - The community support this game has got over the past 9 years has been phenomenal - Tens of thousands of fans got into modding the game, creating and playing around with characters, terrain, graphics using hacks and available tools. - This led CDPR to launch a next-gen version of Witcher 3 in December 2022 What has happened now? - CDPR has released their official mod kit, The Witcher 3 REDkit - What this means is players can now create their own levels, characters, cut scenes, animations, weapons, storylines, territories and quests! - This mod kit is FREE for all existing players! - It is, to a very large extent, their world engine and making it available to all its players is kind of a big deal. Their steam page says, 'The Witcher 3 REDkit is more than just a game development tool — it's a love letter to our community!' What will this do? - A 9 year old game, still amazing and they've pushed its life to another 5 years of highly active gaming would be a safe assumption to make. - If a player makes a mod, he can export it and other players can play that mod. This opens a whole new possibility for players to experience the games in ways they've never imagined. It creates a competitive space for storytellers. - They've enabled fans to become super-fans by bringing them closer to the game - This will create a LOT of content on Youtube. Many gamers will now turn into developers and game dev content creators online. - A superb setup for Witcher 4 - which is under development. Serve your product community and they'll love you back like you can't even imagine.
