There isn’t a stronger connection between people than storytelling.” Jimmy Neil Smith Unless you have a story, you don't have a way to persuade people. A good story has the power to engage, persuade, and even improve your life, according to Michael Lewis, The New York Times bestselling author of "Moneyball", "The Big Short" and "Going Infinite." Everyone has a story. You need to own your story. Your story has life lessons, triumphs, struggles, resilience and inspiration. You can share your story and empower people who can connect with you emotionally. Our stories hold power, promises and possibilities for self and others. In essence, your story is about your humanity, not your status. It is an interwoven tapestry of meaning-making and truth-telling about how you amplify the narratives of your life in a way that honours your lived experiences, encounters, events and facts. Here are three strategies to help you share your story with your audience: The Why Matters — You want your audience to know why your story matters by giving it context. It can help them relate to it and develop an appreciation of its relevance. The How Matters — Your audience came to interact with you. They came to share their time to listen, be engaged in your storytelling presentation, and how you make them understand your story is essential. The how matters to your storytelling. It is your gift to your audience. Make it personal; the audience is in attendance to hear from you. The WOW Factor — By understanding the Why and How you get — WOW. Create the WOW in your story. That is what your audience will remember long after your storytelling presentation is over. They may not always remember what you said and how you said it. What truly matters most to your audience is the WOW Factor — how did you make them feel? Your story is your life’s mosaic. Being the curator and artist, your responsibility is to reflect on what matters to you and your audience. A Sunday well-spent polishing storytelling skills beyond tips & tricks! So yesterday, I had an opportunity to attend a workshop on storytelling by Nivid Desai. It was so insightful, interesting, and incisive. Understanding the nuances of storytelling with such fun and engaging made my Sunday worthwhile. I felt like I was in a school again (but attending only my favourite class). I laughed, I learnt, I made new friends, but most importantly, I made my already longer-than-runways watchlist and TBR list even longer with many brilliant and diverse recommendations. (Wish me luck completing these lists in this lifetime! 🙃) So, the next time someone tries to teach me the art of storytelling through tips and tricks, Imma throw this workshop in their face! PS: Google Translate can crack some hilarious jokes! (I wish you understood Gujarati to understand that joke!)

7 questions I was asked last week in a storytelling workshop. How many stories are too many stories How long should a story be What about if the person you're speaking to doesn’t respond to stories? Do you need to practice your stories? Can you share other people’s stories? Can you make up stories? What about exaggerating them? My short answers to those questions are: Depends 60 – 90 seconds If they are human they respond to stories Yes Yes but your own are better No No 🤔 Your thoughts? P.S.
