Attention craft brewers and brewery owners! In this presentation, we will provide highlights from a new book entitled Craft Breweries & Cities: Perspectives from the Field. Our goal in creating this book was to illustrate how craft breweries have helped to shape urban and community issues. It is a cross-section of research, case studies and examples of how breweries and local government have worked together to foster greater dialogue, opportunities, and understanding in communities across the country. We demonstrate how craft breweries are meaningful contributors and participants in addressing critical challenges that communities face. The book covers issues ranging from demographic and geographic trends to community, economic and workforce development to gentrification, land use, zoning, and regulations; from adaptive reuse to racial equity and sustainability; from crime to craft beer tourism. Several of our contributors will be presenting on their topics in this presentation. You will hear common themes, such as the importance of "place" as well as specific, important topics like race and equity, crime, and beer tourism. Our goal for this presentation is to provide you -- as craft beer professionals -- important considerations for building and sustaining relationships with your local government. Anyone that has started a brewery understands location is critical when it comes to regulations, permitting, attracting consumers, and thriving in that neighborhood. Whether you are considering starting a brewery, opening additional locations, or just want to hear about how others have faced and overcome these challenges, this session is for you. Moderator: Julie Wartell (UC San Diego) Panelists: Dustin Hauck (Hauck Architecture) Gail Williams (BeerByBart) Josh Newton (University of California-San Diego) Neil Reid (University of Toledo OH) Omar Passons (City of San Jose CA) Steve Shapiro (BeerByBart) Huge thanks to ABS Commercial, Beer Law Center, and Wipfli for all your support on our Spring Virtual Conference. Last month when Big Shed Brewing announced they had been placed into voluntary administration, the South Australian community rallied behind them. The outpouring of support and generosity from the public, industry, partners and other local businesses was invaluable, and Big Shed are now out of administration, and plan to pour beers for years to come. We’ve seen how important it is to get behind local businesses, and as a state - we are really good at it! However, the support for not only Big Shed but all SA breweries can't stop there. There are currently over 80 independent breweries in operation across the state, many of which are small family run businesses that employ locally and are more than just a brewery, they are part of their community. We know how much South Australians love to support local brands and businesses, so let’s continue to Buy SA. For SA. and together, we can ensure the continued success of this vibrant industry. See SA's 80+ independent breweries and what you can do to help below. #BuySAForSA #SAindependentbeerindustry #buyandsupportlocal #sabusiness #craftbeer

Support your BC local breweries if you want them around. "The cost of operating a brewery has skyrocketed, but our customer base has not. There are more than 230 of us in BC, competing for a finite amount of liquor store shelves and tap lines. The prediction is that over 20 per cent of us will go under before the end of 2025... Market saturation and customers cutting down on alcohol are reasons that get thrown around a lot for the current state of the industry—and while these definitely play a factor, the big thing that’s likely going to get many breweries out there is the sheer cost to own one." https://lnkd.in/g8iFZcwb Jorden Foss Steel & Oak Brewing Co. #beer #beerindustry #brewery #bcbreweries

⁉ Is the craft beer market going to s**t? You might think “Yeah, it looks like!”. 🙋♂️ My answer is that it’s NOT going to s**t! The market is maturing, and changing and it needs you to mature and change to stay afloat. 🗞 This article says that craft breweries are under threat as closures leap 49%. What it doesn’t say, because drama and fear drive more clicks, is that many other breweries are working smarter, and they are driving slower but consistent growth and those who are the smartest will last the longest. 🧠 How do you act more smartly? You look at your costs and you start looking at solutions on how to decrease those costs. I am no economist, in fact, I am a brewer, but that’s what I do when the money coming in is less than how it used to be. I co-founded a start-up, so believe me, I know the drill. 📣 Let me do a bit of self-promotion here! Buying your hops on Brewing Trade makes you save 25% of your hops cost without compromising quality, JUST MAKES SENSE! That’s why you helped start Brewing Trade. https://lnkd.in/epGn_FhN
