Hire a great CFO/Head of finance sooner rather than later. A mistake I see a lot of founders make is to wait too long or hire too junior. Once you’re scaling quickly (especially if you’re a fintech), don’t even think about hiring someone mediocre in this role. When you set up your business things were relatively simple..... 👉No employees 👉Hardly any transactions 👉No one to answer to ... Upon being affected by a restructuring and subsequent reduction in force at Bank of America, I decided to go down the road of entrepreneurship and found my own consulting firm, TJG Financial Enterprises. I market myself as a more cost effective alternative to hiring a fractional/interim finance executive from a large firm, while offering the same level of quality service plus a more personable relationship with my clients. After several projects that spanned M&A, a fixed asset system implementation, an ERP implementation, construction of a quality of earnings analysis and most recently, an interim CFO opportunity, I am now ready to utilize my additional skillset (plus my vast Corporate FP&A, Corporate Accounting & Public Accounting experience) to return to the corporate workforce during the Q4 hiring season. I'm kindly asking anyone in my network on here who is hiring or knows anyone looking for an experienced Finance Executive/Business Partner to please share this post and/or comment. Even if you don't know anyone that's currently hiring Finance personnel at the Director/Executive level, I would still appreciate it if you could share this post for additional visibility/reach. I know the value that my unique skill sets add to an organization. I also have several very important characteristics that I would like to have in my next role: 1. Management that is open to ideas around process improvement/automation/change management and system implementation around the areas of financial reporting, financial analysis and internal controls. 2. Having a 'seat at the table' around strategic financial initiatives to determine if they will add value to the organization (i.e. constructing financial models around large capital expenditures and potential acquisitions and presenting results/recommendations to Senior Leadership). 3. The opportunity to analyze/synthesize large amounts of financial data, summarize information and present the results (tell the story) to both finance and non-finance audiences. 4. The main differences between interim and fractional finance directors lie in their time commitment and your business’s requirements. Interim finance directors are full-time, temporary replacements for a specific period or project, often filling vacancies or managing transitions. Fractional finance directors work part-time, offering ongoing strategic financial support to businesses that don't need a full-time CFO. They provide expertise without the commitment of a full-time hire. The choice between the two depends on the company's specific needs and circumstances. If you need a full-time finance leader for a defined period, an interim finance director is better.
