I think about this interview clip quite a bit. https://lnkd.in/gk-4G6jF A) Because Herbie is a piano hero of mine. I vividly remember my first time hearing the opening synth line of Chameleon and it’s still just as good the 10,000 time I’ve listened. (I may or may not be hitting 10,001 as I write this post) B) Because it makes me a better resource to my team. I lead a small team that has a mountain of work and limited capacity. We want to perform well but we hear a lot of “wrong” chords along the way. 🎶 Plunk Somebody forgot to add customer service training to the product roadmap, and suddenly, we need to create content and train 300 people in 1-2 weeks to avoid a rollout delay. 🎶 Plunk Business priorities shift, and just like that, our carefully planned roadmap no longer matters. 🎶 Plunk An audit reveals hundreds of pieces of content that need to be reviewed, and everything else has to go on hold. These moments can be frustrating and unexpected, but I’ve learned the best way to handle them is to stop, listen, and then play the notes that make it right. It takes practice and intentional effort, but the result is always worth it—your team will feel the difference, and so will your outcomes. #Leadership #Teamwork #ProblemSolving

If you are always on the quest for engaging conversations filled with actionable insights, you're in for a treat. In this interview, my former boss, Reed Phillips, CEO of Oaklins DeSilva+Phillips, sits down with the amazing Dr. Laura Sicola to reflect on his illustrious 35-year career in the media and investment banking industries. Reed shares what makes him a successful communicator and leader. Here are my three takeaways: 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲. At Oaklins, the team holds two-hour meetings on Mondays, during which everyone openly shares their work. Compartmentalizing information is counterproductive, especially at a small/mid-size firm. 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. As an introvert earlier in his career, Reed has come to terms with the fact that staying quiet doesn't equate to a lack of presence. Judicious use of words is more effective than appreciated. 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝. Reed does his homework to identify shared interests or experiences with conversation partners - a quick way to build rapport. There are plenty of other insightful gems and a healthy dose of humor. What resonated most with you from this interview? I am curious to hear your thoughts! And be sure to follow Dr. Sicola's series, Speaking to Influence, which ranks among the top 1% of podcasts worldwide (Details are in the links below).
