🎓 Celebrating the End of the Course: Geochemical Indicators for Environmental Monitoring 🌍 The course at the University of Urbino’s Faculty of Geology has come to an end, and I’m filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible experience it has been. Teaching this group of enthusiastic, talented students was not just a professional duty—it was a privilege and a source of inspiration. 🙌 What an amazing mix of future geologists! 🌋 While only one of them has chosen to delve into environmental geology, my own specialty, the others are setting their sights on equally exciting fields: paleontology, geotechnics, 🌊 hydrogeological risk, and 🌏 seismic risk. And that’s exactly as it should be! 📢 Paper alert 📢 PhD student Ivan Krivokorin published his first paper in Quaternary Science Reviews (Q1, CS:7.8): '𝗢𝘅𝘆𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗺 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻' 🐘 This study examines the isotopic potential of #mammoth remains from three paleontological sites in the southeast of the West #Siberian Plain (SEWS): Shestakovo, Krasnoyarskaya Kurya, and Volchia Griva; and the development of a new dataset for Siberian #paleoclimates. 🧪 Oxygen isotopes from 29 mammoth enamel and tusk samples and horse and deer enamel samples. Sample preservation was investigated using ATR-FTIR and obtained δ18Op, δ18Oc, and reconstructed δ18Ow values for 28-22 ka cal BP. Preservation assessments revealed variable preservation conditions. 📈 Our findings indicate an increase of 1.4‰ in reconstructed δ18Ow values from glacial levels at 28-23 ka to late-glacial conditions at ca. 17–15.5 ka, likely reflecting climatic warming at the end of the #Pleistocene. 🌏 The potential of the Volchia Griva, Shestakovo and Krasnoyarskaya Kurya sites for investigating the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM) in SEWS is enormous due to the large amount of #fossil material buried there. Walker Circulation in in the Pacific tropics dictates marine stratiform cloud coverage and the rate of cold carbonic acid enriched deep water upwelling along the tropical latitudes from the eastern Pacific subtropics all the way west to the Atlantic subtropical climate zone.
