https://lnkd.in/gUnHH4Zz The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) market is experiencing significant growth driven by the maritime industry's increasing adoption of digital navigation solutions. ECDIS systems offer vessel operators real-time access to electronic navigational charts (ENCs) and a wide array of navigational information, enhancing safety and efficiency at sea. With regulations mandating the use of ECDIS on certain types of vessels, such as SOLAS-regulated ships, the market for these systems is expanding globally. Additionally, advancements in technology, such as improved user interfaces, integration with other onboard systems, and support for augmented reality features, are further driving the demand for ECDIS solutions in the maritime sector. #ECDIS #MaritimeNavigation #DigitalCharts

Five navigation systems. Why five? Because I like to select the best one 😁 1️⃣ ECDIS is compulsory. 2️⃣ Qastor 2.5 is our old but trusted friend. 3️⃣ Qastor 3 IPad is the follow up of Q2.5 4️⃣ Navionics is my pocket nav system 5️⃣ Wartsila was the captain's Many offerings but none has it all. We are working on authoring a specification document that describes our ideal Pilot Information and Navigation System (Pins). Drop me a Dm if you would like to know more about Pins 🤗 Happy navigating. #marinepilots #digitaltransformation

AIS VS LRIT Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) and Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) systems stand out for their distinct roles and applications. Since December 31, 2004, AIS has been mandatory for ships over 300 gross tonnes on international voyages, among others, serving as an essential tool for collision avoidance and enhancing situational awareness. It enables the automatic transmission of vital ship information, improving safety and navigational efficiency. Conversely, LRIT focuses on global ship tracking. These systems, while different in scope and operation – AIS with its publicly accessible data and LRIT with its restricted, government-only access – both play instrumental roles in modern maritime navigation. The following table offers a comparative insight into these systems. #maritimesecurity #maritimesafety #SOLAS #UNCLOS

Difficult tasks at sea need special features! The ECDIS NX by Anschütz GmbH therefore offers a range of optional functions for offshore vessels that make working at sea easier, more efficient and safer. Area alerts (geo object events) transform the #ECDIS into a powerful surveillance tool. Any geometric shapes can be drawn on the chart and enriched with complex alert rules. This allows very flexible and customised area alerts to be created. Intercept is another feature that enables the vessel to catch up with any suspicious target. Using target data and current or manually set speed, the ECDIS can calculate instantaneously the interception course, rendezvous point and estimated time of arrival. The interception information is updated dynamically with changing input. Without any additional equipment, ECDIS NX can significantly simplify the #surveillance tasks of #offshore vessels with these functions. The crew is empowered in their actions and can act efficiently and quickly, clarify critical situations and ensure safety. Dimitris Zissis informed me of the new Maritime and Coastguard Agency general exemption for USVs below 2.5 meters (MGN 702(M)). First of all, this is a step in the right direction. However, I see some limitations. A typical use case for such USVs is bathymetry, monitoring of sub-surface installations, etc., which can include using the USV as a launch and recovery vessel for small ROVs and AUVs. So, this exemption might limit such operations with the following conditions: - The vessel is not permitted to tow another vessel or object - The vessel is not permitted to be fitted with a lifting device - The vessel is not permitted to operate as a mother vessel This makes me wonder: Is a tethered ROV considered a towed object, or does the cable make the USV and ROV a single object? :) MGN 702(M): https://lnkd.in/dUbqp6uE
