I am excited to share that I will be presenting my research paper, "Gruen Redux: Exploring the Concept of Membership in Marketing," at the upcoming Society for Marketing Advances conference! This paper was developed during an Independent Study as part of my MBA at the University of Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business, under the guidance of Professor John D Branch. My paper builds upon Gruen's 1994 work, "Exploring Consumer Behavior with Respect to Memberships,” which ignited a call for research on membership within the fields of marketing and consumer behavior. Gruen argued that the significance of membership had been largely overlooked and highlighted the lack of rigorous scholarship on the topic. Since his seminal work, membership programs have proliferated, but the academic rigor around this concept has not kept pace. In the study, I examine core questions around defining and understanding membership: Do we really know what membership is? What constitutes a membership program? What does it mean to be a ‘member’? To answer these questions, my paper applies the Evolutionary Model of Concepts, highlighting the conceptual immaturity of membership. My findings underscore the need for a renewed research effort to (re)ignite Gruen’s call for further study, to clarify the concept to advance our understanding of membership and unlock its full potential.

We unveil the transformative themes and scholarly trajectories that have shaped marketing research. Our methodical approach, employing multiple correspondence analysis, connects historical and contemporary threads in this dynamic field. 📈 As we witness the relentless transformation of the marketing domain, our study maps its historical contours and paves avenues for future scholarly inquiry. The Journal of Marketing Theory & Practice recognized our article “PLS-SEM: indeed a silver bullet” – retrospective observations and recent advances” as the journal’s 2024 top-cited article. 🎉🥳 I am particularly happy about this recognition because this was one of my favorite projects and is still close to my heart. ♥️ In this paper, Christian M. Ringle, Joe Hair, and I offer a critical review of our 2011 Journal of Marketing Theory & Practice article “PLS-SEM: indeed a silver bullet,” assuming we were reviewers with today’s background knowledge of the method. Taking a reviewer’s perspective in our comments, we clarify several ambiguities and errors in our initial presentation. 📚 Very often, we need to refer to a publication or an article during our academic or company-related research. However, how can we be sure that the source we use is reliable? 📹 In this video, I discuss the ways to evaluate the publications we use as sources, both academic and non-academic. ↪ In general, when controlling the quality of academic papers, we need to focus on the article’s publisher, number of citations, reviews, journal reputation, articles’ sources, and author’s reputation. ↪ For the non-academic publications, it varies based on the case and publication type, however, we need to examine the publication source, its recency, and the sources and methodology it is based on. ↪ In the video, I also discuss the examples of publications and how to examine them. ❓ How do you evaluate the publications before using them as the sources for your research?
