Learning never stops. The past two days were invested in gripping dialogues, conscious strategising and immersive thinking routine to understand the impact that we as educators make in the classroom towards student learning and attainment, and by way of focused observation. An intensive module with Heads of Departments, Academic Coordinators and Principals in mind primarily and educators in general, aspiring to take up leadership roles, was designed to achieve 'evidence-based reasoning', besides adding a host of best practices and active learning strategies to empower us in ways more than one. The philosophy of 'Learning by doing' and not 'Teaching by telling' was at the heart of this two-day learning engagement, where we explored the GROW model (Goal, Reality, Obstacles/Options, Way forward), the importance of Learning Walks towards effective monitoring and evaluation of our team members, the art of effective questioning propelling powerful inquiry-based approach, effective feedback techniques, the impact of attainment through a cyclical method of 'Plan-Teach-Review-Reflect' and so on and so forth. In the words of John Hattie, "School leaders and teachers need to create school, staffroom, and classroom environments where error is welcomed as a learning opportunity [...] and where participants can feel safe to learn, re-learn and explore knowledge and understanding." This article by Ewan McIntosh continues to be very pertinent, and likely a challenge for schools and systems, particularly at this time of the year, when reflecting upon the year, and considering where to next. Stating the obvious "Strategy, when it’s well designed, helps people make difficult choices more easily". He challenges us to consider: "by choosing to do what you’re choosing to do, what are you implying you are not doing? Can you list it out so that the implicit becomes explicit?" That is: We focus on the learning experience as a whole > we do not just focus on the end result. So, ....We do “interactive direct teaching” > here’s what we do not do: … We do “interdisciplinary learning” > here’s what we do not do: … I love this notion of considering the opposite of your mission; your key purpose! Does stating the opposite of your strategy sound ridiculous? As Ewan McIntosh asks, "Would the opposite of your purpose statement also carry weight, but for a competitor school. There is so much value in student-centered learning. Giving students voice and choice allows them to feel connected and a part of their own learning. Encouraging feedback helps teachers create an environment and instructional routines that best meet individual learning styles. I got a chance to read an article recently, and it made me reflect on how thinking beyond grades could bring a positive change to our education system. The article from Harvard Graduate School of Education discusses using badges instead of traditional grades to recognize specific skills and achievements. When I was teaching, I implemented this badge-based approach to highlight individual strengths. For instance, students could earn badges for their creativity in writing, leadership in group activities, or problem-solving abilities. This method not only acknowledged their unique talents but also motivated them to engage more deeply with their learning. The positive impact was immediate and noticeable. Students who previously felt discouraged by traditional grading systems began to thrive, as their unique skills were recognized and celebrated. They became more enthusiastic about participating in class activities and took pride in earning badges that showcased their abilities. This approach fostered a more inclusive and supportive learning environment, where every student felt valued and encouraged to explore their interests. By moving beyond grades, we can create a learning culture that truly prepares students for the diverse challenges of the future.
