As we expand our efforts to breed climate-resilient vegetable hybrids, we invited Professor Alon Tal to speak to the R&D department and other Hazera colleagues in Berurim on “Making Climate Tech Work”, the title of his recent book. In his presentation, he emphasized the critical role of agricultural innovation in addressing climate challenges, highlighted compelling examples in agriculture and industry, and discussed crucial strategies to mitigate climate change and to steward environmental quality. 🔬🌱 Exciting Scientific Impacts Ahead! The FARMWISE project will bring important research impacts by advancing our understanding of the interplay between water, agriculture, and the environment and the need for policy changes. Nutrients and pollutants from agricultural areas are mainly spread as non-point source contaminants. Yet, no European policies have been developed to combat this type of pollutants. The reason for this is likely a lack of decision support. With long-term goals of enhancing policy development and scientific contributions, the FARMWISE project is defined by impactful research and collaboration, large-scale data collection and testing cutting-edge technologies in lab and in upscaled field conditions. This will result in optimising water use in agriculture, and will form a basis for improved policy making and decisions based on research-based results. 🌱 Sharing Science Across Disciplines: A Fun and Engaging Experience! As scientists, we often focus on advancing knowledge within our field, but how often do we take the time to share our work with colleagues from different areas? I had the incredible opportunity to do just that at International Potato Center (CIP) (CIP), showcasing our work in conservation agriculture to our amazing colleagues from finance, IT, grants and contracts, among others. During the event, we explored how practices like zero tillage and mulching with rice straw can transform farming, improve soil health, and even help mitigate climate change. The highlight? Demonstrating how potatoes can be grown sustainably without tilling the soil—right here at CIP! 🌍🥔 It was a joy to see everyone, from departments not typically involved in agriculture, get their hands dirty (quite literally!) and engage with the science that drives our work. These cross-departmental exchanges are not only fun, but they help foster a deeper understanding of our collective mission. 🔑 Key takeaway: Science becomes stronger when shared. No matter your field, take the time to bring your work closer to your colleagues—you never know the new perspectives and collaborations that might emerge! Most science literature on regenerative agriculture focusses on how what regenerative farmers and ranchers do affects the land and the outcomes received. What is less often discussed is how engaging in regenerative practices affects the farmer! Many regenerative farmers speak of having needed a transformation in mindset at some point along the way, and this frequently develops into increased well-being and changes in how they see interconnections in the world. This fascinating research study from the journal of "Agriculture and Human Values" uses a "more-than-human ethic of care lens" to explore the relational aspects of human beings engaging with nature to regeneratively transform the land. The shift in mindset required is thought by the authors to have transformational potential for society as a whole. "Through high engagement of chestnut growers in Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky, the breeding program, known as the Chestnut Improvement Network, now has more than 20,000 new offspring growing in on-farm environments. Revord will be collecting data from these progeny on early year yields, bud-break time and kernel size and quality. Revord’s goal is to identify new, promising selections that may consistently avoid frost damage, offering producers needed production stability across environments, and which offers early production and return on investment."
