ACAMH Featured Paper from the JCPP Concurrent and prospective associations between family socioeconomic status, social support and salivary diurnal and hair cortisol in adolescence ACAMH members can read the full paper: https://bit.ly/3HlPZs8 'Exposure to socioeconomic adversity is hypothesized to impact hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis activity and cortisol secretion, but existing evidence is inconsistent. Yet, few studies have investigated this association using a developmental approach that considers potential protective contextual factors. This study examined the role of stability and changes in family socioeconomic status (SES) in the prediction of multiple cortisol indicators and tested whether social support moderated these associations.' Something very wrong is happening with psychiatry. This is the story of a 28-year-old woman in the Netherlands, diagnosed with autism, borderline personality disorder, and depression who heard from her psychiatrist, "There’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better”, and who is expecting to end her life by euthanasia in May. The fact is that persons with these three diagnoses (autism, borderline personality disorder, depression) can get better with evidence-based treatments/interventions. A commentary by an ethicist: “I’m seeing euthanasia as some sort of acceptable option brought to the table by physicians, by psychiatrists, when previously it was the ultimate last resort. I see the phenomenon especially in people with psychiatric diseases, and especially young people with psychiatric disorders, where the healthcare professional seems to give up on them more easily than before.” You never give up on a patient. These psychiatrists should leave the profession.

It’s a sad, sad commentary on those who claim to help, but clearly they are not. Collectively and individually we can do better, we can be better. I suggest shifting away from mainstream’s pathogenic methods and deficit-focused approaches and embrace salutogenic themes. People have the capacity to heal, recover, and build toward resilience if we would just recognize and affirm their capabilities and show them how to access them. #aztrauma #traumainformedcare #resiliency #salutogenics

ACAMH Featured Paper from the JCPP A network approach to the investigation of childhood irritability: probing frustration using social stimuli ACAMH members can read the full paper: https://bit.ly/3tWm6eS 'Self-regulation in early childhood develops within a social context. Variations in such development can be attributed to inter-individual behavioral differences, which can be captured both as facets of temperament and across a normal:abnormal dimensional spectrum. With increasing emphasis on irritability as a robust early-life transdiagnostic indicator of broad psychopathological risk, linkage to neural mechanisms is imperative. Currently, there is inconsistency in the identification of neural circuits that underlie irritability in children, especially in social contexts. This study aimed to address this gap by utilizing a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm to investigate pediatric anger/frustration using social stimuli.' Author(s): Khalil I. This summarizes why we do what we do.
"If we practice with a narrow view of the world, we're going to make a lot of mistakes, a lot of misdiagnoses and errors in treatment." BMC's Chief of Psychiatry David Henderson, MD, co-founded the Africa Global Mental Health Institute to address the urgent need for culturally sensitive mental healthcare on the continent and beyond.
