I just returned home this weekend from a big regional area meet in Pensacola and saw this. Wanted to share it as this is the beauty of cross country and how it would apply if we used that same spirit in our work and personal lives. These are not my words but as a 7+ year cross country mom, they very well could be. —- What if we lived life like we were all in a cross country meet? What if we watched other people and recognized that we're all just trying to get across the finish line? What if we understood that some people are running as hard as they can but battling illnesses, invisible injuries, and internal struggles? Every step is hard, but they're trying not to quit. What if we cheered for everyone even if they weren't on our team? What if we realized just finishing something, no matter how long it took us or how messy it seemed, was enough? In fact, it was a win. What if we used every race as an opportunity to learn more about ourselves and how we could use each other for support, inspiration, and help to reach our goals? What if we cheered loud for the winner, but even louder for the one who comes in after because they accomplished something great, too? In a world that tells us it's about me, me, me, what if we started living to support everyone brave enough to be in the race? What if we started treating our lives like we were all in the same cross country meet? What a beautiful world that would be. Love hard. Whitney Fleming Writes

There’s been a lot of chatter about commencement speeches lately, and it’s reminded me of this gem from last year. What stands out to me especially is this segment (a bit of a read, I know!): “The best way to spot an idiot, look for the person who is cruel. Let me explain. When we see someone who doesn't look like us, or sound like us, or act like us, or love like us, or live like us, the first thought that crosses almost everyone's brain is rooted in either fear or judgement or both. That's evolution. We survived as a species by being suspicious of things that we aren't familiar with. In order to be kind, we have to shut down that animal instinct and force our brain to travel a different pathway. Empathy and compassion are evolved states of being. They require the mental capacity to step past our most primal urges. This may be a surprising assessment because somewhere along the way in the last few years, our society has come to believe that weaponized cruelty is part of some well-thought out Master plan. Cruelty is seen by some as an adroit cudgel to gain power. Empathy and kindness are considered weak. Many important people look at the vulnerable only as rungs on a ladder to the top. I'm here to tell you that when someone's path through this world is marked with acts of cruelty, they have failed the first test of an advanced society. They never forced their animal brain to evolve past its first instinct. They never forged new mental pathways to overcome their own instinctual fears. And so their thinking and problem solving will lack the imagination and creativity that the kindest people have in spades. Over my many years in politics and business, I have found one thing to be universally true. The kindest person in the room is often the smartest.” The value of kindness cannot be overstated. The best leaders I’ve ever had are all people who I would first describe as kind, followed by brilliant, innovative, and honest. Go out there today and be good to people, and look for the other kind people and make it a point to connect with them. You won’t regret it.

"Has anyone seen the Delaware?" This Independence Day, I was at my parents' house on the Delaware River. Every year the neighbors put on a small parade using their personal cars with July 4th streamers or an ATV or tractor. We then proceed to drive around the neighborhood slowly and wave at a small group of spectators. This year, we shook things up. Mounting a canoe to a boat trailer, the kids and I reenacted George Washington's crossing of the Delaware a mere 200 feet from the river (although miles North of the actual crossing). Not all that hard to create, and it was a certainly a crowd favorite. Here's my big takeaway. With a little creativity and effort, any one of us can turn a normalized event into something more special and memorable. For example, and learning this from a past boss, I occasionally bring root beer floats into a morning meeting to hand out. Not a ton of effort--certainly talked about afterwards. The best leaders I know do three things: 1. Get the job done (a prerequisite to the other two) 2. Make it fun 3. Create memories Sometimes it only takes a little extra effort to make something extraordinary!
