Every year, pollution gets its moment in the spotlight during Diwali, even though it's been quietly freeloading in the background all along. And somehow, we end up giving it a special boost, taking the air quality from 'bad' to 'legendary.' I know that crackers bring excitement, and I understand the sentiment behind celebrating Diwali with all the sparkle. But why do we forget that pollution isn’t just a Diwali thing? It's a year-round issue. We hear people saying "Pollution toh pehle bhi hai" but why don’t we realize that we're only adding more to the mess? Enjoy it responsibly the way you want. Instead of focusing on one day, let’s think about the impact of our actions year-round. Here are a few things we can do to help reduce pollution every day: —> Use home appliances wisely and conserve energy where possible. —> Turn off lights, fans, and ACs when not needed. —> Choose public transport whenever possible. —> Carpool instead of driving individually to reduce emissions. Across Asia, climate change poses risks that could impact the lives and livelihoods of billions. China, the world’s largest emitter, faces severe risks to food security, water scarcity, and energy supplies if global temperatures rise. Similarly, Indonesia and Bangladesh—both highly vulnerable to sea-level rise—could see drastic impacts on coastal communities and agriculture, vital parts of their economies. The economic costs are staggering. A report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) highlights that, without urgent action, climate risks could reduce GDP across Southeast Asia by 11% annually by the end of the century. This Diwali, I’m thinking about what we leave behind after celebrations. Perhaps, you should too. India’s traditions are rooted in sustainability—our ancestors celebrated with purpose, not excess. In today’s world, 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐅𝐄 (𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭), launched by PM Modi at COP26, reminds us to bring that intention back, urging us to make “mindful and deliberate choices” over mindless consumption. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞: the United Nations Environment Programme says if just one in eight billion of us adopts sustainable habits, we could cut global emissions by 20%. What if each of us committed to being part of this shift? So, I’m starting with the #SustainablyYours challenge at Accacia; inviting everyone to rethink the way we celebrate. For me, that means choosing clay Diyas over plastic lights, natural Rangoli colors over chemical dyes, and wrapping gifts in materials that can be used again. I’m also looking at sustainable options inside our homes—low-VOC paints that improve indoor air quality, E0 plywood with no added formaldehyde, and reclaimed wood for furniture. Each choice, whether big or small, makes a difference.
