Ah, Miles... Miles Davis' career exemplifies the creative essence of jazz... Contrary to many jazz purists' judgements, Miles never "sold out" when he created brews of jazz mixed with rock, funk, soul, and pop. His relentless drive to evolve through various styles of music (as well as taking up painting during the 1980's), was his way of expressing his creative energies... regardless of whether he alienated his established audiences (or possibly because he did alienate them?). Like the greatest innovators in any discipline, whether music, visual, written or other art forms, whether in business, sports, sciences, academics, Miles found new ways to explore and achieve his objective--creative expression that impacted his audiences in new, exciting, and relevant ways. Despite often being misunderstood and criticized for not following the "rules" of jazz composition or performance, not cowtowing to people's assumptions regarding his race, or not observing "proper" social behavior, Miles pressed forward into new realms. Not always successful in ways that he or others might like, in comparison to Babe Ruth (most strikeouts in achieving the homerun record for decades) and Michael Jordan (game-losing misses in making record game-winning shots), Miles arguably has a lower misses-to-hits ratio with his experiments than they achieved. Miles was inarguably an insightful, courageous, innovative, hard-driving leader who also was often mercurial, unstable, and insecure. Still, he attracted, collaborated with, and mentored numerous skilled musicians who have been recognized as high achievers and leaders in their own right. I believe we should measure Miles' greatness based on his impact on the course of creative jazz and related music styles, directly and through the musicians he influenced. But after all these words, the proof is in the listening. Check out an album from each of Miles' five major phases of evolution across almost 50 years and enjoy!
Happy #BlackMusicMonth! Celebrating the musical legacy of Miles Davis this month and every month ❤️ Did you know these facts about Miles' life and career?

Friday Arts. Here at Springboard Opera, we are about Supporting Emerging Artists. But we also hang our hat on innovation … as in Transforming the Opera Idea. And for us, the first step in Supporting Emerging Artists was, well… To ask them. What THEY need to get themselves started. We get that they are new graduates, putting their best foot out for the first step in a long career path. And they may not actually know what they practically need to get up and running. But then again, they might. They are part of the most educated and empowered generation ever. And they have the tools. So, as well as engaging with the knowledge and experience of those who have gone before, we are asking them, one of our big stakeholders. We may even ask our other big stakeholders, some of whom may not be singers. But they might help us to Support our amazing Emerging Artists and on the way, Transform the Opera Idea! Because this is the Springboard Way. This is Springboard Opera … if you’re up for a 21st century adventure, up for creating something new, exciting and paradigm-busting to support young people, jump over to our website https://lnkd.in/gXgNVTGg, and get involved. Singing optional. Leslie Martin Luisa Tarnawski Gheorja Haidley #Future #TransformationalLeadership #LeadershipDevelopment #Directors #Technology #Performingarts #YourNetworkForLife

Did you know? 🤔 King David, famous for slaying Goliath and ruling Israel, was also a prolific musician and poet. Traditionally credited with writing many of the Psalms, he's referred to in 2 Samuel 23:1 as "the sweet psalmist of Israel." The Bible also mentions David playing the lyre to soothe King Saul's troubled spirit (1 Samuel 16:23). How do you think David's musical talents influenced his leadership and legacy? I saw the musician Passenger at the Sydney Opera House recently and his song "Things that stop you dreaming." The lyrics resonated with me, particularly the chorus "if you can’t get what you love , you learn to love the things you’ve got , If you can’t be what you want , You learn to be the things you’re not , If you can’t get what you need , You learn to need the things that stop you dreaming" I interpreted this as so many of us have big dreams at a young age but slowly as we age those dreams begin to get too "hard" and we stick with comfort instead. So many of us let fear, doubt, and past experiences stop us from pursuing our true potential. The barriers to our dreams are often self-imposed, built from hesitation and the belief that the 'right time' will come. But what if we stopped waiting and took the first step today? Breaking through these invisible walls isn’t about having everything figured out, it’s about embracing the possibility of progress. True growth comes from moving forward, even when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain. What’s one step you can take today to move closer to your goals? The only thing standing in your way might just be you. #mindset #goals #leadership #development

Have you ever experienced a Chinese opera? Recently, Sarah and I stumbled upon an ancient Wind God festival at Tainan, Taiwan. It was Sarah’s first time attending, and we decided to immerse ourselves in this unique celebration. Chinese operas are captivating performances that blend dance, song, and martial arts. They often narrate popular stories, drawing the audience into a world of tradition and artistry. Interestingly, storytelling plays a crucial role in sales as well. When presenting solutions to clients, how you convey your message matters. Crafting a narrative that resonates with their struggles and demonstrates how your solutions can address their needs builds trust and understanding.

3 things you can start TODAY so you can be ✨inimitable✨ like Lin-Manuel Miranda! This powerful quote from the hit musical Hamilton reminds us that in a world full of uncertainties, the one thing we have control over is ourselves—our actions, our mindset, and how we choose to show up each day. Lin-Manuel Miranda, a brilliant composer, lyricist, and actor known for works like “Hamilton” and “In the Heights”, embodies this message. As a proud Puerto Rican, Miranda didn’t wait for the world to carve a space for him—he created his OWN, breaking boundaries and opening doors for others along the way. 🏆 So, what does this mean for you? 📌 Embrace Your Uniqueness: Just like Miranda, you are one-of-a-kind. Your experiences, your background, and your voice are your superpowers. Don’t try to blend in; stand out and be proud of what makes you different. 📌 Own Your Journey: You might not control every situation, but you control your response to it. Take ownership of your story, and make decisions that reflect your true self—not what others expect of you. 📌 Create Your Own Opportunities: Don’t wait for permission to chase your dreams. Whether it’s in your career, your personal life, or your passions, take the reins and build something that’s true to who you are. As we continue to celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth, let’s take inspiration from trailblazers like Lin-Manuel Miranda who remind us that our stories are powerful, and our voices matter. Your originality is not just a trait—it’s your strength. So, step into this week ready to embrace and showcase the incredible person you already are. 🔥 #Inimitable #Hamilton #LinManuelMiranda #MondayMotivation

I know many of us seek out loyal customers to explore product innovations and extensions. Seems like an obvious idea. Who better to consult than a brand’s top loyalist. However, research conducted by Giulia Cancellieri, Gino Cattani, and Simone Ferriani, highlighted in the Economist suggests caution. The trio researched attendance of new stagings of traditional operas among opera goers. The research revealed that frequent opera goers were open to novelty in new productions, but they were less keen on radical changes. The work suggests that loyal customers are the least likely to welcome innovation or change in the products or services they love. Therefore, perhaps better to talk to less committed customers about product innovation. And when a brand does innovate, they should be cautious about over promoting the innovation to their loyalists.
