Our Project Partners from University College Cork, Breffní Lennon and Niall Dunphy have published a scientific article, based on our work and efforts in Accept_H2020: "Sustaining energetic communities: energy citizenship and participation in an age of upheaval and transition" . The article presents recent research into the forming of citizen energy communities in Europe and the governance structures designed to facilitate their development. It also highlights the key drivers and barriers to citizen engagement with emergent, novel energetic communities. https://lnkd.in/dijs5iVH

💡 Want to learn about public participation in decision-making on energy and how people want to be involved in decision-making? 💡 Our colleague associate professor Goda Perlaviciute will be giving a lecture all about it on 7 May at the New Energy Academy! While town hall meetings may seem ideal for supporting local #greenenergy projects, they don’t always deliver expected results. Involving individuals in these projects and discussions presupposes eventual project acceptance. However, people’s values and views significantly influence their willingness to participate in decision-making processes. Research shows that #publicparticipation varies depending on the project’s stage, from national visions to local plans. Initially, those concerned about the environment are more likely to participate, but as projects become more concrete, opponents become more engaged than supporters, leading to less effective participation. Timing is crucial. “Fake participation” occurs when people feel consulted only after key decisions are made. Conversely, involving people early may be challenging due to low motivation. Governments, including many in Europe, are experimenting with citizen assemblies to engage citizens early in decision-making. Initial findings suggest that when assemblies reflect the population and allow citizens to influence outcomes, they show promise for increased public participation. https://lnkd.in/dKTnrYnn Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen University of Groningen #environmentalpsychology

Thorough unpacking of #energycitizenship in Energy Research & Social Science...grateful for our good collaborations in EnergyPROSPECTS!
So glad to see our typology of energy citizenship published in ERSS! Throughout its elaboration and empirical validation, we tried to encompass all possible forms of private and public engagement in the energy system, yet without renunciating to the both comprehensive and critical perspective that is the ADN of social sciences. And still hoping it can be useful for practitioners, policy-makers and researchers. A huge thank to my co-authors Martina Schäfer, Bonno Pel, Rene Kemp, Edina Vadovics (Edina Kaszap) for the great collaboration towards this nice achievement of the EnergyPROSPECTS project!

Lower Saxony – Scotland Joint Forum 2024: The Jubilee Edition DAY I: PANEL DISCUSSIONS The first day of the Joint Forum 2024 will be dedicated to two panel discussions focusing on two different aspects of the future of international efforts to address interdisciplinary transformations in academia, industry and global society. Panel I: “Energy and Beyond: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Lower Saxonian and Scottish Energy Transformation” Climate change, renewable energy and engineering are all aspects of the transformation of the global energy landscape. However, in order to fully understand the potential and challenges associated with this topic, it is necessary to examine it from different perspectives and with different focal points. Renowned experts in the field of energy transitions in Lower Saxony and Scotland - including Professor Claudia Kemfert - will discuss the following factors influencing energy transitions in both regions and beyond: - Technology - Law - Economic policy - Social science - Sectoral integration. This panel will be moderated by Professor Gioia Falcone from University of Glasgow, and it will take the form of an interdisciplinary discourse focused on understanding the dynamics at play in the transition from conventional to renewable energy sources, as well as a wide range of social and environmental implications of these shifts. Moreover, it will be an extension and continuation of the open conversation initiated during the Joint Forum 2022, which led participants and speakers to jointly develop the White Paper “Energizing Democratic Partnerships – Securing Electricity from Democratic Friends”. How can we measure and track #energy #justice in #transition processes? Our latest paper is the first to propose an index for a standardized, quantitative comparison across countries in the Global South to measure in how far current #energy #transition #policies incorporate different energy #justice dimensions. The #index is a potentially powerful tool for policymakers to identify the issues that need to be addressed to improve energy justice, and to provide guidance for policy interventions and the monitoring of their trade-offs and effects. Take a look at the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eczQ7YqP The study is the result of an international research project over multiple years across Malaysia, Chile, Jordan, Kenya and Germany. "You could see the mayor in [a local cafe], for example. It’s a real person, so it feels closer to your problems. He might have some of the same ones.” 🙋🏽 Thanks The Northern Times for this write up about the latest paper from Gonzalo Palomo Vélez (with Goda Perlaviciute, Nadja Contzen and Linda Steg) about having more (integrity-based) #trust in local institutions and government than (competence-based trust) in national levels of power when it comes to phasing out #fossilfuels (which takes on special relevance in light of the recent #EU #election results). https://lnkd.in/eurkqkMJ You can read the full scientific article here: https://lnkd.in/eCfzFCTW University of Groningen Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences - University of Groningen Universidad de O'Higgins Eawag #environmentalpsychology

Excited to share that a paper I co-authored during my time at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has just been published! Our research dives into the complexities of equitable decarbonization from the national to community-scale perspective. We show that the U.S. top-down approach to an energy equity framework for decarbonization, while necessary for large-scale policymaking, does not identify all disadvantaged communities nor the diversity and complexity of their concerns and is insufficient alone to ensure equitable decarbonization. https://lnkd.in/guY2Bs3Z
