Join us at ATREE for an open defense of PhD thesis titled "Systematics of the land snail genera Cyclophorus and Diplommatina in the superfamily Cyclophoroidea of the Indian region" by Nipu Kumar Das, PhD Scholar, ATREE. The terrestrial or land snails comprise one of the most diverse groups of land animals, with nearly 31,000 described species globally (MolluscaBase 2024), inhabiting a wide range of habitats. They serve as important components of soil-leaf litter biota, playing a significant role in ecosystem functioning. These soil invertebrates are characterised by their smaller size, slow-moving, small range, and poor dispersal powers, making them highly endemic and vulnerable to extinction.

The Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) of The UWI Cave Hill Campus presents a public lecture by visiting scholar, Dr Rodrigo Pereira Medeiros, Department of Geography, Federal University of Paraná.    Title: Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in Brazil Time: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Date: Thursday, August 15, 2024 Venue: LR1, Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) Event contact: patrick.mcconney@cavehill.uwi.edu    Dr Rodrigo Pereira Medeiros is an interdisciplinary marine scientist with over two decades of field experience. He will share perspectives on marine spatial planning in Brazil, mainly from a fisheries perspective. This could potentially inform the ongoing Barbados marine spatial planning process.    Marine spatial planning is more than just ocean zoning. It aims to prioritise diverse ocean uses and users through an analysis of trade-offs along many dimensions that reflect the preferred directions of societal development and well-being. A well-informed society is critical for this decision-making.

PhD student Cathryn Harvey, a Deathwatch Beetle expert, is examining a 70-year-old replacement plank from HMS Victory's deck. Collaborating with researchers from the University of Oxford and the The National Museum of the Royal Navy to further study the Deathwatch Beetle. The project aims to support ongoing conservation efforts, gain a deeper understanding of the beetle's behaviour and biology, and help to preserve the historic warship, HMS Victory. Scientists have discovered a strange species of marine invertebrate that breaks the traditional cycle of birth, ageing, and death to which most animals are bound. Comb jellies, also known as ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi, can defy age and revert to younger versions of themselves, according to a recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They found that adult comb jelly can regress and reach a larval stage if they are subjected to extreme stress. As per research, comb jellies could also be one of the first animals to have existed, as their origin can be traced back to an estimated 700 million years ago. If the epitome of fame is having something named after you, #HOVAlvin pilot Bruce Strickrott now has TWO trophies on the shelf: a hydrothermal vent-dwelling hagfish (Eptatretus strickrotti), named in 2005– and as of today, Pectinereis strickrotti, the deep-sea ragworm in this video. Strickrott helped locate and collect the worm while piloting the deep-sea sub around a methane seep offshore of Costa Rica. Researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, #WHOI, and other institutions named the new species after him in a study published today in PLOS ONE. Since 2009, scientists have encountered at least 450 species at the Costa Rican methane seeps, 48 of which are new to science.
