JUST PUBLISHED: Incorrect administration of blood products is a critical concern, occurring once in every 12,000 units transfused in the United States. Blood product documentation and scanning are vital for patient safety, yet difficulties in scanning multiple barcodes on blood transfusion bags often lead to delays and the need for manual overrides. This quality improvement project utilized the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycle of improvement to address blood product scanning in a 495-bed hospital in New York City. The scanning rate for blood products increased significantly from 69% in January 2021 to 96% in May 2021, representing a 39% improvement. Subsequently, increased compliance in 2022 demonstrated sustainment of best practices. Implementation of the PDCA method led to increased compliance in scanning blood product bags following barcode scanner recalibration. Read more and share: https://lnkd.in/eYWtbD5T

Delays in these deliveries can have serious consequences... How do Medical Couriers impact Patient Care? 👇 Faster Diagnoses: Quicker delivery of diagnostic samples like blood tests allows for earlier diagnoses and potentially faster treatment interventions. Timely Treatments: Life-saving medications, vaccines, and even organs for transplant rely on rapid and reliable delivery to reach patients when needed most. 🩺💡 Peripheral Intravenous Catheters (PIVCs). How dangerous are these and how good are we handling them? @WoCoVA presentations show PIVCs are far more dangerous than we think, and on top of that, nothing has changed in early detection in more than 20 years. Are PIVC complications preventable? Yes, but only if we stop using peripheral catheters. Is that realistic? Not really. Meanwhile, we need sensor technology to help us detect complications early, even before they can cause damage. #Healthcare #PIVCs #PatientSafety #WoCoVA #EarlyDetection #ivWatch @MarciaRyder
