Last month marked 1year as an assistant accountant at Umoyo Natural Health, one of the fast growing manufacturing companies in Zambia. I started as an intern and progressed to assistant accountant just a few months after my graduation at the university of Zambia. I stood on 3 important principles that helped me grow and learn so much to take up the role of accounts assistant. 1. *Be open minded* Straight from university I knew I had a lot to learn because it was my first time doing any practical accounting work. I had to learn and take up tasks that would seem off my job description. This attitude brought good reviews from my supervisors because I had learnt so much in a short period of time. This allowed me to quickly advance from doing basic finance department task such as filling and data entry to management reports and credit management all because I willing to learn and take up tasks that seemed to big for young man with little knowledge of the industry. 2.Ability to handle pressure “I am able to work under pressure” Accounting in a manufacturing industry can be stressful. It will require you to go an extra mile to achieve set targets and beat deadlines, the above phrase gets tasted to the limit. You see, dedication to achieve a dream starts by beating your personal set record of how you do things in a day and the best solution to handling pressure for me was practicing everyday. Once you learn the art of doing something very well, you learn how to do it in a shorter period of time. For example, Once fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt kept beating his records because he practiced for each race and become good to an extent that he set the fastest time in the history of Olympics. So keep practicing and manage your work very well. 3.Passion Passion is defined as a strong inclination toward an activity that people like, find important, and in which they invest time and energy. Some days I’d find myself doing extra hours and working on weekends to prepare for Monday reports and meetings not because I had nothing to do, but because it became fun to have my work well drafted and set to submit my work on time. So keep doing what you love the most and it will become part of you and take you places you never imagined. #passion!

Over $1000 made in 6 months of consistency and focus. (It’s a long read, but it’s worth it) 2010 I graduated from the University & served my Fatherland 2012 I engaged in Network Marketing as a side hustle 2013 Got a job as an Account Officer at MCNL in Lagos. 2015 Got married, parenting started & my career paused. 2017 Changed my job and became an Accountant. 2021 Relocated to Abuja and got a better opportunity 2022 Yet I was still unhappy and wanted a drastic change. It seems my years of work experience have not been fruitful. I couldn't even boast of having a good portfolio as an Accountant I was just underutilized in all the job roles so far. Then I remembered my passion for marketing products & services to people, It made me resign from being a company Accountant and registered for digital marketing online courses. I used my new side hustle (event planning) for practice Focused my digital marketing learnings on the events business. Within 6 months of consistent marketing. I made $1000 ROI and over 10 customers were retained. Then the thought of how to manage my event business finances set in… Thanks to my accounting background, the thought was settled. Yet I was still feeling unfulfilled… I thought to myself, “It will be good to write and enlighten business owners on how to accurately manage their finances and also simplify those big accounting terms that give non-financial persons headaches”. This drive and passion got me here today: A FINANCE CONTENT WRITER My point for you to take home is to; Never settle for what makes you unhappy in life!

Things are not rosy at Naivas! Have been keen to note under stocking of many items in syokimau, sgr, and kiambu mall outlets. This is an indicator of poor working capital management. They need to stop over capitalization by opening so many branches towards improving working capital. Failure to address this means the operations will be down scaled, lessor profits and leading to the uchumi, tuskys and Nakumatt route. Financial management and accounting cannot be googled though many think it's an easy matter. For companies to succeed, must employ experienced, skilled individuals in finance and accounting skills among others. A skilled Finance manager and accountant is one who posseses Accounting skills working capital management skills Capital budgeting skills investment skills principles of management skills Budgetary skills strategy skills governance skills Cash flow management skills Management reporting skills Financial reporting skills System management skills This is a bare minimum but must be supported by a reasonable organization structure, good governance team. Most companies are collapsing due to nepotism, sexual rewards at expense of performance rewards, piracy of professionals (handling other peoples area of training) Average life of a company in Kenya is 30 yrs. To live to these years or beyond the above must be considered without an option.
