#Mobilitymoment Mid-Flight Medical Emergency During my flight back to the U.S. from the Middle East, a medical emergency occurred midair. Key points: 1. The call for medical assistance was communicated via a flash on the TV screens, rather than an announcement. (What if medical professionals were sleeping or not paying attention?) 2. When the flight crew accessed the medical kit to check a passenger's vitals, they discovered that the blood pressure monitor was malfunctioning and had to search for new batteries. (While batteries can fail at any time, this is something that should be regularly checked to ensure functionality during emergencies.) Although flying is generally safe, we must avoid complacency and diligently uphold best practices. Let's ensure that our friendly skies remain as safe as possible. Wishing the passenger a speedy recovery. #flight #airline #aviation #medical #emergency #transportation #bestpractices Transportation is Mobility, and Mobility is Freedom ™

They are many FAA requirements regarding airline life preservers, many of which trip up volunteers during studies to test their usability: →27% of life preserver donning volunteers were confused by “upside down” donning diagrams on the life preserver. That’s required by the FAA so they can be seen by the wearer →27% were confused by which was the front back, top or bottom of the life preserver. They are required to be reversible. →14% had difficulty getting the life preserver over their head because of glasses and ear rings. →There were multiple other issues too, which we go through in our new, online Air Travel Emergencies class… Link in Bio DOT/FAA/AM-14/14 Inflatable emergency equipment I: Eval of indiv aviation life preserver donning tests, 2014. #aviation #planecrash #cabincrew #airsafety #BeBetterPrepared #FlightAttendant #CabinCrew #AbleBodiedPassenger #airtravelemergencies #FrequentFlyer #TECC #TCCC #firstresponder #lawenforcement #immediateresponder #swatmedic #combatmedic #paramedic #swat #fire #firefighter #ems #emergencymedicine #18D #crisismedtraining

Some sad news from the skies. Turkish Airlines pilot Ilcehin Pehlivan collapsed and died while flying from Seattle to Istanbul. One of my colleagues who is a pilot for Turkish recently flew with him just last month. The international aviation community lost a valuable member yesterday. Pehlivan had worked for Turkish Airlines since 2007 After an unsuccessful attempt to give first aid, the other pilots decided to make an emergency landing and diverted straight south to JFK airport in New York, but he died before landing. If you read the flight path, you can see where the aircraft abruptly changed direction and flew straight south towards JFK. The Airbus A-350 (a wide-body jet aircraft) was flying just above Northern Quebec, just east of the Hudson Bay, and almost to Arctic Ocean via the Great Circle Route. My thoughts on why they went all the way to JFK instead of a closer airport: There aren't a lot of airports that the large plane could easily divert to who could safely accommodate a landing and provide emergency treatment. I would be interested in the thoughts of others. From what I read Pehlivan (59) had just passed a medical examination in March that showed no health problems. Pilots in their late 50s or early 60s are generally the most experienced and most valued by their peers. Pilots of all ages routinely need medical screenings and evaluations. However, even with such diagnostic and preventative care, pilots just like athletes can have sudden cardiac events that are difficult to predict or anticipate. Thankfully there were other pilots on board to safety fly and divert the aircraft. This is why long-haul overseas routes typically have 2 or even 3 sets of pilots. Another reason to keep 2-pilot airline operations mandatory in most cases according to the size of the aircraft and the length of the flight. A pilot's job is very stressful and hard on the body. While pilots earn very good salaries, the profession is not for everyone or just anyone. We need qualified and experienced pilots who are willing to put up with the rigors of the work environment. Pilots spend many days each month away from their family and friends. Jet lag and excessive travel clearly can physically and psychologically affect the circadian rhythms. RIP Captain Pehlivan #immigration #globalmobility #pilots #aviation #greencard #eb2niw

In this article, Linda Nelson addresses a commonly encountered question for those dealing with claims concerning injury suffered by aircraft passengers is whether or not the accident leading to the injury occurred in the course of embarkation or disembarkation. The issue is one on which parties frequently disagree and there is no authoritative judgment definitively outlining the parameters of (dis)embarkation. Most airlines and aviation organizations have specific criteria for landing approach continuation. Did you know that the Flight Safety Foundation's ALAR Briefing Note 7-1 recommends that all flights must be stabilized by 1000 feet above airport elevation in IMC and 500 feet above airport elevation in VMC.These guidelines are crucial to ensuring safe landings. #Aviation #Stabilized
