🌱 Textile-Garment Industry Goes Green to Meet Global Export Standards Vietnam's textile and garment enterprises are ramping up efforts to green their production chains, aligning with stricter environmental regulations and sustainability demands. 🚀 The European Union (EU), one of Vietnam's key export markets, is leading the charge with its European Green Deal, targeting a 55% reduction in net emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This means tougher regulations for industries like textiles, focusing on eco-design, waste directives, and extended producer responsibility programs. 🔄 Leading the Way: May 10 Corporation has been greening its operations for the past three years, investing in modern machinery that consumes less energy, adopting solar power, and sourcing recycled and natural materials. By transitioning from coal-based fuels to biomass energy, May 10 expects to reduce its carbon emissions by more than 20,000 tonnes annually by 2024. ⚡ Vinatex is also making strides by measuring carbon footprints across product life cycles and developing circular production strategies. Its members have already cut electricity consumption per product unit by 2% compared to 2022. However, challenges remain. As noted by the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), most Vietnamese textile exporters are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), facing hurdles in transitioning to green production due to high conversion costs and lengthy processes. Korean Chemical Industry Shifts Toward Green Materials According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea, South Korea‘s chemical industry is increasingly involved in the production as well as the research and development of eco-friendly materials for consumer goods as consumer awareness of climate change continues to grow. Chemical industry sources revealed a surge in the market for eco-friendly materials used in consumer goods on Monday. According to Hyosung Group, the global eco-friendly fiber and fashion market is valued at 23 trillion won ($16.8 billion), with a recent average annual growth rate of 12.5 percent. Projections indicate that the entire eco-friendly fiber industry, including the fashion market, will hit a staggering 75 trillion won by 2030. Kolon Industries Inc. has been producing synthetic suede products using recycled plastic since 2021, with around 20 percent of its synthetic suede products made using recycled plastic as materials. “Recycled materials are about 30 percent more expensive than conventional petroleum-based materials, but we are seeing robust demand for eco-friendly products that has led to the expansion of these products in sales,” a company official said. Hyosung TNC Corp. is ramping up its marketing efforts for environmentally conscious consumers by integrating eco-friendly products under its Regen brand. These efforts include collaborations with popular fashion brands such as North Face, K2, and Discovery Expedition. Regen currently accounts for 4 percent of Hyosung TNC’s textile division sales, and the goal is to increase this share to around 20 percent by 2030. LG Chem Ltd. and SK chemicals Co. also provide eco-friendly materials to fashion brands, with LG Chem supplying bio-circular balanced poly-olefin elastomer and other eco-friendly materials for insoles to China‘s Descente. These shoes will be launched in China in the second half of 2024 under LG Chem’s eco-friendly product label “LETZero.” For its part, SK chemicals provided Ecotrion, a material derived from corn, for Blackyak‘s latest line of hiking shoes. Fiber recycler Recover will open a new manufacturing facility in Vietnam’s Dong Nai province in early 2025. The facility will span 150,000 square feet and have an annual production capacity of 10,000 metric tons. Currently, the country recycles only 18,000 to 24,000 tonnes of apparel-grade yarns, representing just 5-7% of the annual 330,000 to 500,000 tonnes of cotton waste generated.
