In a world where we are trying to improve our food systems to protect our planet from environmental destruction, there can be unintended consequences for humans. I was fortunate today to speak about 'faux' meats and if they are the answer. There is no doubt that we need to boost our plant-eating for improved human health, however, in our desire to deliver sustainable diets the recommendations from Eat-Lancet where animal-sourced foods are significantly limited place young children, women of reproductive age, and senior adults at risk for deficiencies in essential micronutrients (Vitamin A, B12, D as well as calcium, iodine and zinc). I just came across this stunning prize competition called " XPrize Feeding the next billion" which addresses the need for alternative proteins at scale. People are demanding high quality of proteins as food, but our resources are limited to supply an exponential growing population. Therefore, more innovations are required, more sustainable options are needed, and more diversity on production sources are crucial. The prize was launched on July 12th, 2020, and it will have the final award ceremony on October of this year. The winning team will present multiple cuts of chicken breast or fish fillet alternatives replicating the sensory properties, structure, versatility, and nutritional profile, almost the same product with the only difference these products have a significant lower environmental footprint.
