Lucien Vilhalva de Campos' reflects on his experience of co-teaching a course at CEU fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment. By transcending traditional teaching methods, his interdisciplinary approach cultivated a more comprehensive understanding of human rights and the migration situation along the European borders. Most importantly, the course nurtured a critical understanding of migration-related issues by addressing interconnected social and humanitarian challenges in contemporary Europe. Where art thou, Economic Research Southern Africa (ERSA)? (V) Another thing that seems to be missing are the workshops/seminars/webinars in which ERSA managed to bring international people like James Robinson, Axel Dreher, Paul M. Vaaler, Daron Acemoglu, Eliana la Ferrara, Catia Batista, Nathan Nunn, David Gollin, Tim Besley, Peter Rosendorff, Nicola Limodio, Robin Burgess, Elias Papaioannou, Dieter Vollrath, James Fenske, Andrea Presbitero and so many others. What an intellectual orgy those workshops/seminars/webinars were, almost on a monthly basis. I understand there are still some (sporadic) activity happening there, however, if not mistaken, most of the sporadic activity are actually organized by other organizations coopted by ERSA. In all, we expect more from ERSA, and one day in its history ERSA was in line with similar international organizations, with a vibrant working paper series, relevant training courses provided by local and international instructors, workshops/seminars/webinars with the very best in our profession, so that our 'community of wills' could learn from the best. And by being funded by our South African Reserve Bank, even more and better is expected!! #southafrica #economics #governance

📢 Next week join CMI researchers Lovise Aalen and Elling N. Tjønneland, and Lise Rakner from University of Bergen for a discussion on the new Africa Strategy, unveiled by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August. ➡️ Can this single strategy effectively address the diverse challenges and opportunities presented by a continent with over 50 countries? 🌍 While Africa has effective democracies, economic growth, and prosperity, it also grapples with conflict, human rights violations, and the world's largest humanitarian crisis. 📄 The strategy can potentially revitalise Norwegian engagement on the continent, but this hinges on its ability to respond to real-world needs and local priorities. 📆 Wednesday 11 September 📍Bergen Global & Online 🕣08.30 - 09.30 CET *NB - This event will be held in Norwegian More info - https://lnkd.in/edW_bZE3 #events #Bergen #Norway #Africa #research #development #politics

🌍 13 Days to Professorial Inaugural Lecture of Prof Sijekula Mbanga, Ph.D Titled: "Human Settlements are Much More than Housing: Towards a Transformative Theory of Practice for Sustainable Futures." What makes one a subject matter expert? Instead of trying to find the scientific explanation I placed myself in the eyes and feet of a young boy, many moons ago, growing up in the rural plains of Tsomo. I may not have been there, but I do know that that young boy recognized early on that education was the key to unlocking opportunities and a bright future. This drive led him to become a distinguished expert in housing and human settlements, boasting a quarter of a century of extensive experience in the construction and infrastructure development industry. Today, he stands at the forefront of the professionalization of the human settlements sector not just in South Africa, but across the SADC region, Africa, and the globe. As the Head of the Chair for Education in Human Settlements at Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology - Nelson Mandela University. His commitment to enhancing the livability of neighborhoods, cities, and villages for current and future generations is evidence in his life's work. His mission focuses on empowering youth, communities, and industry stakeholders to foster the development and management of sustainable cities. We will look back on 10 October 2024 as a historic day in the Human Settlements sector, a seminal moment in the making. #SustainableFutures #HumanSettlements #Education #Leadership #InauguralLecture #FullProfessorship #NelsonMandelaUniversity #Empowerment

Sometimes you fall into a research project and it's just too good to let it go. That's what happened when I contacted a university archivist to try and determine which course was my father's "worst," and was introduced to a class that promoted eugenics and community surveillance throughout the first half of the 20th century. Recently, I was invited to share some of this research during the Canada Region Anti-eugenic Scholarship Hub Speaker Series. The topic intersects the histories of post-secondary education, public health, and my family, and has close ties to present attitudes. You can find all of the talks from the lecture series on the website, including my contribution, "'The highest form of compassion is prevention!' The promotion of eugenic thought at a Maritime university": https://lnkd.in/e4R8DhNV

Has anyone else noticed the remarkable growth in research capacity across African academic institutions? More and more high-quality research is emerging from African scholars, covering diverse fields with rigor and professionalism. It's inspiring to see this evolution in African academia. However, there's a pressing concern: while much of this research ends up in libraries, journals, and academic platforms, it often stops there. We're seeing a gap between the brilliant work being produced and its practical application in driving real change—whether in innovation, policy, or development on the ground. Too often, projects and programs are designed to resonate with donor agendas rather than address the deep, authentic needs and aspirations of the communities they intend to serve. How can we bridge this gap? How do we ensure that African research not only informs, but transforms? It's time for us to rethink how we translate our research into tangible outcomes that accelerate Africa's development. The continent has the intellectual firepower—let's make sure it leads to impactful innovation and real progress. What are your thoughts on how we can close this gap? #AfricanResearch #Innovation #AfricaRising #DevelopmentImpact #TransformAfrica #AcademicExcellence #SustainableDevelopment #AfricaLeadership #FutureOfAfrica #PolicyChange #ResearchToImpact #DevelopmentGoals #Africa2030 #EducationForChange #InclusiveDevelopment #YouthEmpowerment #DonorAgendas #GlobalDevelopment #RealImpact #ResearchForChange

The Ghana Scholarly Society Conference commences today at the University of Bradford as academic contributors from global networks explore the impact that interdisciplinary research and engagement can have on Sustainable Development Goals in Africa. Associate Professor at the University of Bradford and President of the Ghana Scholarly Society, Dr Kweku Adams (SFHEA) has said: "This conference is a great opportunity for collaboration as we bring together different researchers to explore the role of African Academics and Scholars in addressing complex social issues in Africa". "We hope that during the conference we can bring together those across five tracks to explore the research and engagement being made into these areas that impact the accomplishment of this agenda and the SDGs". The conference will explore five themes of research - business & management; economics, finance & accounting; law & society; science, engineering & health; social science & development. Over 70 academic contributors from more than 40 schools globally have come together for the conference over two days.
